wild hogs with a knife?

A fella from Texas I know says he goes out hog hunting with a knife. They hunt them with dogs. When they "catch" one, the dogs are holding the head end and a guy is holding the rear legs then the "hunter" sticks the pig with a knife.
Is this true or is this guy pulling my leg?

It's true. I'm tellin' ya, those texans are nuts!!! It's kind of exciting though! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Border line insanity...but true.

I read, years ago, of a guy (WA?) who killed black bear with a knife. If memory serves, he used dogs to tree the bear, and then climbed the tree to get the bear. Now that is a seriously deranged individual!

222shooter, Come to Texas and I will introduce you to my bulldog, ACE, He will catch you a hog by the ear and hold him while you stick 'em. Lots of fun, especially at night running through the pasture trying to catch up with the bay dogs, So you can turn the catch dog (Ace) loose.
Come on down and raise your adrenaline to an unknown high!!!!!!!!!!

Geeeeeez. You guys are nuts! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I think I might try.

He said it was pretty intense. What size pig sticker should I use?

A blade no less than 6" with a good hand guard or a spear with a short handle. I use a Columbia river saw back, About a 9 " blade on it.

if you ever get a chance to do it go for it. 3 yrs ago me and my buddies were really into it. you would be amazed how well the dogs will hold down a 200+ lb hog. we used pits, blackmouth kerrs, and ridgebacks. my dog cowboy was half pit half ridgeback. we hunted them in the brush and on rice fields west of victoria,tx. the knife i used was a usmc kbar. the way we did it was whoever got there first would get to stab them. my tecnique was to go over the pigs back and grab the front rt leg and stab him in his arm pit as fast and deep as possible until he breathes his last breath.

one night we chased a big boar about half a mile and ended up running into a rosehedge bush. if you have never seen these bushes the can get as big as a bus. well cowboy followed the boar in and we couldnt get back to him and the hog in time and that boar cut his stomach open. we stuffed everything back in and stapled him up but he died before we got him to the vet and after that i just didnt want to go through all that agian so i havent done it in a while.

If your an adrinalin junckie, You need to try it at least once. If not, And your not up to jumping hogs and hard headed dogs, Stay on the porch with the pups.
Seriously, The rush is addictive, wounds heal and chicks dig scars.
Go for it if you get the chance.

Anyone know of a good place that does this? I live in Colorado and there aren't any hogs here. I have been looking for a place to go, hopefully not too expensive. Thanks!

Douglas Mason, Mason Catahoulas in Cotula TX, Do a google search for him, He specialises in these kind of hunts. He's a stand up guy. Probable knows more about hog dogs than any body.

Every time i go i end up in a stream with the dogs and the hog./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif but ya it is fun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif but wet for me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I saw this on a tv show not too long ago, I believe it was Tred Barta. I thought he was abolutely bonkers at the time (guess I still do). It would definitely take a much younger and quicker man than I. You'd have to have a lot of faith in those dogs too not to let go as you are going in with the knife.

Jay ,
Just put you on a 4weeler pal.
And once we get his back leg and him flipped around there’s only like a 75% chance of him getting you buddy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I Ialways have the blue coat and the staple gun and duct tape ready pal /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
