Will it take a magnum?

BillyD, I am with you and by the looks of things both you and I are one of the "old guys". I see we are both Life Members of the NRA and proud of it. These "kids" aren't even smart enough to realize that the only reason that they own a gun today is because of you and I and the NRA.

All right I have to step in here a little bit. A 22 caliber designation does not ALLWAYS mean that the same diameter bullet is used. Believe it or not the older hunters, shooter and reloaders probably know this better that the younger shooters.

- A 22 lr bullet is not the same diameter as the 22mag bullet. And yes I do know about the convertable ruger single 6's. Notice that both bullets will shoot out of the same barrel. As a young boy I remember much discussion about single six's shooting either the 22lr or the 22 mag. best due to the difference in bullet diameters.

- The earlier 22 hornets shot a 0.223 bullets, but the modern 22 hornets use .224 bullets.

- The 22 Savage Hi-Power shot a 0.225 (or is that 0.226) bullet.

- Most other 22 center fires are designed to shoot the same 0.224 bullet. I can see some confusion when shooting a 223 remington because the 223 shoots a .224 bullet.

Here's a stinger for ya though, you can shoot any of these bullets in a 22 caliber centerfire without any real trouble. The 22 high power bullets will be squeezed a bit but they will work. I've seen a bunch off 22 hi-powers shot with a 0.224 bullet, I've seen a number of hornets designed for the 0.223 bullet shot with a 0.224 bullet. I've never seen any trouble except for a fall off of accuracy in some of the guns.

Hello,

Michael, while your post is correct, it may only complicate things for some of the new shooters. I forgot to avoid the "22 caliber nightmare" that it is (i.e. "where can I get skinny/fat bullets for my 22"). My bad, should have used a 30 caliber example. I was trying the KISS method, without the ole "at one time is was...225, blah blah, blah".

Thanks for clearing it up for me guys. I was always worried about how to hunt and learn about the animal. I became naive toward the gun and just shot what my dad had. So you can say I'm experienced in hunting but new to the technicality of firearms.

And to the two who thought this was a joke, if you got nothing good to say or add don't say it at all. But thanks to all the other great members for all your help.
