Wimberley's shooting sticks on Operation Predator

After watching Ed Wimberley on the Operation Predator video use his shooting sticks, I made a set of my own from a scrap piece of tropical hardwood I had in the shop. However, I can't figure out what he uses around the top of the sticks to hold his rifle and limit the opening width of the sticks. Some sort of flexible rubber tubing, but I tried a piece of automotive heater hose and it was way too stiff. Anybody got any ideas??? Also, many, many months back someone posted the name and address of a Colorado ADC hunter who made Wimberley's sticks. Anyone have this info still???

John-

Go to your local farm supply store (Farm & Fleet, Tractor Supply etc) and pick up a bag of castration bands. I have a pair of sticks I made out of old arrows. Slide 2 or 3 castration bands over 2 arrows and that should do it.

Don't know if the bands come in different sizes or not. I have the green ones. Farmer friend I got mine from uses them on sheep.

theedz 155,
Sorry, that's not what I need. I have a couple of open reed calls that use castration bands around the reeds, so I know what you're talking about. I'm looking for some sort of rubber hose that fits over the top ends of the sticks, above where they join. Thanks for the input, however.

I don't know the diameter of your sticks but you might try a bike interturbe. The small kind that the bike racers use.

I made a set just like Wimberly's and they work awesome. I used 10 speed bicycle innertube and attached it with a row of thumbtacks on each side. They are lightweight, sturdy and I use them for both deer hunting and predator hunting.I will try and post a pic of them soon.

Bruce Inness makes them in Craig , Co. and they are $25 shipped. You can call him at 970-824-4289. They are the finest shooting sticks you'll ever see.

I went to the golf course and got two graphite take out shafts for free. Left the grips on. put large rubber bands about six inches down. taped on elastic cord to wrap around gun. total cost free. I like them better than my stoney points. They make great walking sticks. Very light and strong.

Thanks Guys!
I appreciate everyone's answers. I'll try some bicycle inner tube on my sticks, and I'll be calling Craig, CO also. Again, thanks.

Email me if you would like Ed's phone #. I use his and they are really lightweight, functional and made of good material.

I just got the video 2 weeks ago and watch it a lot.Great video.I want to know what caliber Ed is using...looks like a .243,can`t be sure.I too like the strap over the rifle and am going to modify mine in that fashion.I tried to sound like y`all Saturday and had one yelping at me but lacked the skill to draw him in closer...I didn`t see him but I believe I was busted for sure.Seems like the coyotes around here will not break cover to go downwind...they just yelp at me and go away. But at least I`m having moderate success. With floodwaters in the bottoms,I`m looking forward to this weekend`s hunt hunt with snow on the ground.

Hmm...I like the idea of golf clubs....

But if you already have something smaller diameter like arrows or smaller dowels. How about some of that shrink tubing, used in auto, and electrical work. Just slip it over, heat it up over the stove and its a rubber type material that will give you some grip on the fore arm of the gun.

I just used 6" pieces of 3/8" hose over fiberglass rods camo taped the rest of the rods tied them togather with para cord and for $4.00 got a nice set of shooting sticks.

Thanks again, guys! Bam, you're info was right on the money. I talked with Bruce Inness last night, and I'll have a set of his sticks as soon as the Post Office can deliver my check to him and the sticks back to me! He told me that he puts surgical tubing across the top of the sticks. He seems like an interesting character, too.
Pickaway Mick, I think your .243 guess about Ed Wimberley's rifle may be correct. It's obviously a Ruger 77, mountain rifle syle, so that leads me to believe it's .243. It's a great video. isn't it? I'd buy an Operation Predator II video in a second (hint, hint GS).

If I remember correctly it is a .223 and yes we are working on another one John. I don't know when it will be ready though.

I too built a set of sticks, really many sets, others wanted some too, from Eds pattern. I use bike inner tubes for the bands. Keep an extra tube handy in the truck. This time of year I wear them out quick.

ON the bottom of your sticks make a 45 degree cut to make aone sided point and youll see what side to stick into the ground to keep it from slideing open on you then you dont need tubing

Ed's sticks also have that 45 degree cut.

I assumed that the tubing on Ed's is not neccessarily for keeping the sticks from sliding open or for a soft rest but for sliding the barrell and stock into the opening made by the tubing attached to the sticks. I like the fact that when I do that I can actually lift the sticks up for repositioning the gun if I need to move around without using my hand to grab the stick all of the time. I sometimes carry the sticks on the stock depending on circumsatnce in my effort to get set up. Regardless I have used them for almost three years without any problems.
