winchester 100

I have the opportunity to buy a winchester 100 308 for $100. Are they any good? I hear people call them the "jam-o-matic" and they had a problem with the firing pin. But as far as i know, this gun hasnt had any issues. I am unable to tell whether or not it is a pre or post '64.

If it is a shooting gun BUY BUY BUY!! I have a Winchester 100 in 308 that was my grandpa's gun. It shoots 1.5-2" groups at 100, and it never let my grandpa down, and my dad still uses it every year.

Snag it up in a hurry. They generally can't be had for less than $500 in good shape. The only reason they jam is a bad extractor or rusty chamber. Nice find......... Excellent carry rifles. I found one for my wife chambered in .243, Put lots of venison in the freezer over the years.

Exactly. Make sure it works correctly first. 100s are decent enough guns, but they need to be maintaned properly. They have been known to jam, but improper maintenance is also a factor, IMO. Personally, I'll take a 100 over a Rem 740/742 all day and twice on Sunday.

I see 100s for sale all the time. I sold mine, but my good bud still has 1-2 of them. It is not hard to find a 100 in excellent shape for $400-$450 around here.......

Is there a gas system that needs cleaning on them? It has a "vintage" weaver scope that flips to the side of the gun, 2 mags, and a leather sling. I will keep you guys updated....Im gonna bargain with him and i do think i can get it for under $100. Any more experiences with the gun are appreciated. In moderate condition, whats it worth? Would i ruin the value if i refinished the stock?

Thanks

I got it for $100!!!! I shot it a few times and love it!! Someone has sprayed varnish on the stock and got it on the barrel.

Forgot to mention, it is a pre '64.

Plain ol' paint remover - don't use the water based one, and wash it with mineral spirits, and then oil it well.

I've got a 100 in a .243 and love it. I got it when I was 4 years old. I've filled the freezer many years with it. I've always kept it cleaned and have never had a hiccup out of it.

Thanks guys! I tried the paint remover(stripper) and it worked great!!! Im gonna redo the stock and was wondering if anyone has used a black walnut stain? If so can you post a pic?

Thanks

Alright, I got the stock redone and I took it out shooting again today and it wont pull the casings out of the barrel every time. On some of the casings, it looks like it just scraped along it without grabbing it. Do you think its a bad extractor?

I hope that stock ws really trashed or you may end up with less money in hand after all your hard work.

You may consider keeping the old rifle and having your own "personalized" Winny to hunt with. I mean, let's face it, you did not pay much for it, and it is no longer in original form and is probably not going to bring much money. Why not just have a cool old rifle to hunt with? Just a thought.

Like I said earlier, if you keep a 100 CLEAN, and the extractor does not go bad, they are generally pretty reliable. However, they did have some firing pin issues in the past and a recall was also issued. This is an old number so I'm not sure if it still works. You could call it and see if your firing pin was ever replaced 1-800-852-5734. The newer pins have "flatter" sides than the old ones. There also may be some kind of markings inside the receiver designating that the work was done.

If you order one, give them the serial # of the rifle, just to make sure it is correct. I would also suggest seeing if a somewhat stiffer extractor spring is available........

The stock was pretty bad. I decided not to stain it and kept the wood original without sanding. I just put a few coats of varnish on it. To be honest with you, after I got the metal cleaned up from the last guy's varnish job (its a long story), and got the stock re-coated, it looks factory new from the pictures I have seen.

I will try and get the firing pin replaced and get the extractor and extractor spring as you suggested. It is the extractor causing my problems. After a close look, I can clearly see the extractor is trashed.

I was considering selling it, but even before I read your post I figured I might as well keep it. Heck, I only paid $100, it cant get much better

When I was shooting Saturday, it got about a 1 1/2" group at 50 yards and I had an AWFUL rest. I wouldn't doubt that this gun will throw the same group at 100 yards with a good rest.

Thanks
