Winchester 1894

Got a question and even though it is .38 cal it is not related to a big bore post I started. My cousin, through inheritance, has a Winchester 1894 in .38-55 caliber that I am thinking about talking to him about. He is not really a shooter at all and the rifle will truthfully probably just sit for years as is. The rifle is down in CA so I don't have serial numbers and I don't really want to let on that I am intersested in it (not trying to screw him out of it either). I don't know the age of it but my uncle would probably have got it used roughly in the '60s. My question is does anybody know when they stopped or if they stopped chambering in this round? It's only in fair condition and would probably need to have a capable hand do some work on it but it is worth pursuing?

I think the 1894s were built into the 20's, when they changed the name to the model 94, and I imagine the .38-55 was included up till then at least. It's still a popular cartridge with the cowboy shooting crowd and I think you can still get factory ammo for it.

Howdy
Acording to Venturino's book Shooting leverguns of the old west mod 94's in 38-55 and 32-40 were dropped by 1930. I've had a 1894 38-55 made in 1896 and now one I rebuilt for a cowboy action longrange levergun with a 28" Badger barrel and MVA vernier sight, both are great shooters. And their is a good selection of factory ammo still loaded for the cowboy shooters.

if you can get it from him for less than 500, your doing good! Anything not in 30-30 will bring pretty good coin, better to get it now than he find out about it!
