Winchester 7mm WSM

Anybody here have any data for anything with the 7mm WSM???

I just picked up a WInchester shadow, the cheap plastic nike lookin stock one, with a RCBS neck sizer, RCBS FL sizer die set, about 75 rounds of W-W brass, (15) 120g NBT's, (15) 150g Sciroccos, bag of (50) 175g NP (factory 2nds), full box of 160g NP, and a big 50 round MTM case guard all for $200...

He said the rifle shot the best with 120g NBT's (according to him anyways)...That might make my decision a little easier on what bullet to use as this gun is going to be a truck rifle for varmints/coyotes/ and the occasional mule deer I suppose. The 120g NBT @3400fps looks interesting..I need to get the trigger worked down to about 2.5#, get to loading some shells, and wait for the wind to die down and head to the range..For now, I"m going to slap a Leupold vari x 2, 3-9x40 on it in leupolds rifleman base/rings...

I've always wanted a 7mm WSM for some reason..Cant really justify why I need it, I have a 25-06 and a 7 RM already, but I guess this rifle was a heck of a deal, but with a cheap [beeep] plastic stock, I wont care if it gets dinged or scratched like I do when I take my 25 or 7 RM... I figure it can serve as a do-all cartridge for anything from coyotes through elk for me, kinda back up more then anything. It will primarily be a coyote rifle. Intentions are to use 120-140g NBT. NBT's are getting a little expensive though, might look at something else thats a little cheaper to shoot...

Yah, thats right, everything but the scope/base/rings/bipod, for $200!! I couldn't pass it up..He wanted $150 for the gun, and when I asked if he had any brass I could buy, he went and got all the stuff he had for it and threw it in for an extra $50.

I figure for the price, I couldn't pass it up...

My dad had one of these rifles in a 270 WSM and it shot pretty dang good with only a trigger job and reloads..It did 3/4" at 100 yards w/140g SST's and MAGPRO at 3200+fps..Hopefully this shoots as good!

I went and shot the 7 WSM this morning, tried a few loads with 140g NBT, RL-19, w-w case, Fed 215, 2.9"

I loaded 3 each at 67g, 68g, and 69g. Just trying to get an idea what accuracy/velocity I was looking at. I wanted to use up the little RL-19 I had, I figured it looks to be a good powder for the WSM case...

67g shot the best giving .916" w/no flyers.. Velocity read 3295, 3300, 3305fps over my Chrony... I think this load will be acceptable as there were no fliers and velocity was nice and consistent...More testing later, I"m out of RL-19...

68g didn't shoot to bad either, it put 2 touching and ended up being .966" Average velocity was 3340fps...

Not to bad for a $200 gun, totally stock (including 10lb trigger) and throwing some loads together, IMO...I think it will meet or beat my accuracy expectations of 3/4" at 100 yards with just a little more playing around...

69g produced a 1.276" group, putting the 1st and 2nd shot within 1/2", but the 3rd opened it up. Velocity read 3370, 3377, 3365 over my Chrony, so it shows promise as a consistent load, might play with seating depth a tad...

All in all, I think It will turn out OK for a $200 rifle...I need to get the trigger worked down to about 2.5# and fine tune the 140's a bit, then it'll be up and ready to smack some yotes!!

Dear Kyotekiller,

You think after buying a Win. M-70 for $200.00 that you would "splurge" for some targets other than picnic plates.

Having that 3.1 inch box magazine sure helps on the seating depth. Since you have used up your rel- 19 give H-4831SC or Reloader- 22 a try.

Your velocity is impressive just hope your bullet choice is "tough" enough for those close in shots.

Ill give you your money back out of it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif Ive had a want for a wsm caliber also.

I would also love to have a 7 WSM for a LR rifle build as well. I think it would be kick butt with a 162g amax or 168g vld...But would be no different then my current 7 RM..

I know 1 thing, this rifle has a pretty good sharp kick to it, jeez..I dont get how these idiot gunwriters say these WSM's have "less perceived recoil" yah my a$$. The rifles like 7.5lbs and throws 140g bullets at 3300fps..It kicks worse then my 7 RM, I guaruntee that much...

Hog- Ha ha ha, I usually use a piece of poster board, but I ran out..Or I use cardboard. Stuff thats big and I always like to use squares. It just seems to fit my eyes right when the crosshairs are bracketed in the middle...I"ll probly try some RL-22 next as thast what I have, and it also looks to be a good powder velocity wise..Plus my 7 RM loves RL-22 so I could buy a jug and stock up..We'll see though, preliminary results with RL-19/140g bullets is not bad, actualy better then I expected..

I'll sell the rifle w/scope and dies for $500 when I do decide to sell it..But I probly wont..

I"m not worried about the 140g NBT at 3300fps exploding to bad on impact. I'm not looking to save fur, so I"m betting a shoulder shot coyote at 100 yards or under is going to be pretty ugly...

The only problem I "might" encounter is a deer under 100 yards, but that very rarely happens where I deer hunt. Just dont happen...If it did, I would shoot behind the shoulder.

Velocity at 100 yards should be around 3000fps, so would be suitable for deer at that range/velocity.

I am actually going to give the 139g SST a try next..

There BC's are about the same, and there priced a little better..I've just had a little harder time getting SST's to shoot then NBT's normally...

I"m definately going to stick with a 140g class bullet in this rifle. At 3300fps or so, it'll make short work of coyotes and deer to 500-600 yards..

I have a 7MM WSM in the Coyote. It's the most accurate gun I own. Just under an inch with 150 grain pills. I had a trigger job done and mounted a Nikon Monarch 3-9X40 on it.

No telling how it would shoot if I hand loaded for it.

Hello,
Just joined the site, and noticed that you have been shooting the 7mm wsm for a while . I recently aquired one of these rifles and was wondering what range are these guns accurate too? I have 140 gr ballistic silvertip , and what yardage should i zero in at? While most deer shots are usually around the 75-125 yrd range here. Would i be comfortable shooting say 300yds. accuratly?
Also , how about hunting elk? This rifle should be powerful enough? Sorry, but i dont know alot about this rifle , as it was given to me by my daughter.
Thanks,
Joe

I have mine sighted 1" high at 100 yards. I shot a mature axis deer with mine not too long ago. The 150 grain Nosler solid base boat tail did a number on him at 125 yards.

The Model 70 Coyote in 7MM WSM is a joy to shoot.

Welcome aboard joebarton! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

To see how accurate your particular rifle is you will have to shoot a 5 shot group at 100 or better 200 yards and see how bad the bullets are spreading out.

I really like my 7 mm WSM. It is a Ruger M77 stainless with a synthetic stock. I wish I would have put a better scope on it but it has a Leupold VX I 4-12X40

It shoots great but I have never tried any light bullets in it.
I loaded Sierra GameKings 160 grainers for elk and deer.
It works well.

I have a Browning A-BOLT in 7mm WSM and it loves Speer 115 Hps for whitetail deer hunting. I have loaded some 145 gr SPeer BTHP that shot good too.
