Winchester builds!

I hear and see Remmington and Savage all the time. Now that I have a winney, does anybody build them? Are there any custom or semi custom winney shooters out there? I've been looking for stocks for an older winchesters with a 2 piece bottom metal and am finding choices are a little slim. What are some options that don't break the bank? Varmint/tactical prefered.

The vast majority of custom Win 70 builds are for dedicated big game hunting rifles. In that respect, it remains very popular. You do not see nearly as many varmint/tactical guns built on 70 actions.

This is the only true custom Winny in the stable at the moment:

270WSM
Trued SS 70 action
Oversized shifter
Pac-Nor SS super match tube
H-S stock

I've always thought it odd that you don't see a lot of model 70's in use. Myself, I've favored them for a long time and like them more then Remington.

Noticed too that not many stores want to carry Winchester. Two years ago I was looking to buy another and couldn't find anyone that carried them. The ones that said they could order them charged an arm and a leg. Reluctantly I bought Remington.

This is a post 64 win 70 that I had redone. Barreled by Douglas HS stock. SWFA SS 5-20. CDI bottom metal. It likes heavy pills. Does great with 208AMAX's and lately has really shined with the Berger 230's. I've started chasing speed more with it lately in hopes of finding something fast/flat and that bucks the wind good. 175gr SMK's seem to be the best I've found in the under 190 gr family.

Mine is a 243 HB and it shoots really good. Has a great trigger also. Just mainly wanting to upgrade the stock for now. I like the H-S.

SVT- whats the stock on your rifle? I like it also.

2much- You always have some BAD AZZ rifles. A man after my own heart or should I say wallet!! I see you guys rifles and there goes another few hundred bucks.

Mine has a 2 piece bottom metal. Am I stuck with it or can I convert to a one piece or mag feed? I know from looking it makes a difference in the stocks (I think).

My favorite model 70, a Stealth I in .308 bought when it was announced the factory was closing. I'd heard quality was spotty, but not on this rifle. Not a great picture but a great rifle.

My son has a M70 Classic Sporter that was rebuilt from a 7 mag to a 300 H&H. Stock is still the walnut classic, very nice gun but fairly heavy at 9+ lbs scoped. Shoots 180 Partitions at 3000fps into MOA or less.
I've got two factory Featherweights, one a USRA .243, the other a new FN 7-08. The .243 is more accurate, but the 7-08 will do MOA with selected loads. They are perhaps my favorite factory rifles, love the stock style and trim lines. I've still got a pair of very nice M700 Remingtons, but these M70s and my Ruger M77s are making it hard to look at any more Big Green guns.

From reading, I think all post 64 winnys up til the 80's were long actions with a two piece floor plate. Can a one piece floor plate be used with a regular long action stock??

Re: the two-piece floor plate models and replacement stocks, from what I have seen from the likes of Boyd's is that there is a difference.

From Boyd's Website:
Quote:please Note: The Winchester® Model 70 stocks are made for the POST-64. Model 70 actions are made with either "No floorplate", "1-piece" or "2-piece" floor plate designs. Please verify which action you have prior to ordering.
All early Winchester® Model 70 POST-64 actions were based on the long action receiver measuring 7 5/8" or 7.623.
Production of the short action receiver started in 1984-85 measuring 7 1/8".
Please check center to center on your trigger guard screws to insure the proper stock is being ordered.

Having a 2 piece, long action varmint model in .243, I have found stock options to be slim. Manners and HS are the only available options when I use Stocky's stock selector. I think you can change the bottom metal and use a different stock but I am not positive.

I built my son one from a 222 long action I had. I came across an HS sporter stock for it. I ordered a Lilja 243 10 twist, #5 contour, SS, fluted 27" barrel. I fitted it to the action and chambered it in 243ai. I had GA Precision thread the bolt handle on it. They had to heat the handle three times to get it soft enough to thread it. I made my own knob for it. I finished the action in CeraKote ultra flat black. My son came home for Thanksgiving and he took it deer hunting. Girls are more important to him but he came with me anyway. Here is a photo of his buck and of the rifle. Not the best picture of the rifle.

Shooter- The post that you have up is what I have been refering to. It makes stock choices kinda slim. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a used one.
