Winchester mod 70 "heavy varmint"

I have chance to buy a 10 year old roughly, Winchester mod 70 bull barrel 26" heavy varmint stainless with a seriously heavy duty composite stock in 308. The scope is a Leupold vary x three. Power is 6.5 to 20 x 50 mm. I personally have it in my hands right now I inspected the bore and it looks perfect. The old guy tells me less than 100 rounds through her. He wants $800 firm. I can't test fire it until next saturday. Would this be a good price for this package. Plus it has a Harris bipod thrown into the deal. I have to shoot it first, but she sure is a beauty. I know 2 much gun is a big rem guy, and for good reasons, but what's the reputation on these guns.

If it looks good and shoots good, I think that is a pretty good price.Like said the scope is worth more than half the price and with a bipod and rings that adds up also. Good luck sounds like a really nice gun.

Mark---It sounds like a good deal with scope/bipod included. I have owned 4-5 Model 70s, and my buds own a bunch more.

PF or CRF? I would be interested in knowing the exact model and exactly what stock is on it, then I could give you a little better advice. For the price, though, it sounds like a good deal......

I've a lot of other Winchesters, but they are all pre-64s in different models.....

2 much
You sure do have allot of nice weapons. The stock according to him is a HS precision varmint The engraving says Winchester mod 70 SA 308 on one side and heavy varmint on the other. It also has a jeweled bolt. Made in new haven ct.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure the one youy are talking about has the ss tube/blue receiver/black HS stock. It was the predecessor to the Stealth model.

IMO, they are kinda hit and miss accuracy wise(pun intended). I do not recall the barrel twist, offhand, but could look it up for you, if you want. Most require a fresh bedding job and a trigger job to realize their full potential.

Test firing would be the way to go. If it shoots pretty good, it can probably be made to shoot even better. Good scope, good bipod. Decent price. I'd say get it, if you like it......

I just tried to slide a paper between the 50 mm objective part of the scope and the barrel. It did not fit, it appears the scope is just barely resting on the barrel. It has leupold dove tail mounts now. Should I go one size higher

I would not go one whole ring size higher, as in another set of Leupold. I would measure the rings, and find a brand of your liking that is just a tad higher than the Leupold. In other words, if your Leupolds are mediums, find a higher set of mediums.

I have a set of 1" medium Warnes in matte here I'm not using if you are interested......

2 much

Will those fit the leupold bases. If so I would be interested in them. But first I have to shoot it, and if I like it cough up $800. My buddy might buy my rem 700 vtr 308 with the Knox axiom stock and mueller scope for $750 Monday or Tuesday. I will let you know, how much you want for them

What I did to fix a scope just barely touching the barrel was put a couple soda can shims under both bases,so it raised it just a hair.

I have one of these in .22-250, blue reciever, stainless barrel, averages around .5" at 100 yds. Has full length bedding block, adjusted trigger to 1.75 lbs. Have shot alot for PD's and sage rats. Still shoots as well as when new. Have no complaints but is really heavy. If you wanted buy new today the rifle is a Stealth for around $1000. and the scope is around $900. so I don't think you would go wrong for $800. with what extras your getting

Update. I finally shot the rifle today. At 100 yds I put 4 rounds into a 1/2 dia. I was shooting federal 168gr Sierra matching bthp. So now I have to buy it lol
