I traded some guns that I never use today on a winchester model 100 in .308

I found out from the web when I got home that All 100's have a safety recall. I called Winchester and they are sending me the info. and a manual.

Once I get the recall taken care of, what kind of accuracy and reliability against jamming should I expect from this rifle.

Please let me know the good, the bad and the ugly regarding this rifle.

Thanks in advance,

They have a spotted reputation...but after the recal repair, they seem to have pretty goood reports of accuracy, and reliablilty...Seems if you get a good one its very good...if its a trouble maker...well it will make some trouble...good luck with yours

I have two M100s, 243 & 308. Accuracy -- 1 to 1.5" after some tweaking of handloads. Reliability is superb.

If you handload, many owners of M100s have found the need to use a Small Base or, even, Ultra Small Base resizing die to assure reliability of feeding. Both of mine require SB RCBS sizing dies. This will shorten your useful brass life, but, IMO not enough to be a serious consideration. I get four reloads per piece of brass.

I've had a bit of a problem finding extra magazines and when I did they were a tad costly, but, they are well made and should last the life of the rifles.

Its a rifle that simply cost too much for continued production. Whether pre or post64, the action and barrel is basically the same. These rifles are guaranteed to appreciate with the passing years.

Let us know what you think about it.

Model 100's have a good rep for tight groups, the full lenth stock's are a big reason for this. Recall was for the fireing pin about 20yrs ago and most have allready been changed.

The only 100 I have experience with has always functioned flawlessly and shot 1.5" groups with factory 308 150gr PP ammo. I'm not a semi-auto guy,and much prefer the model 88 to the model 100, but these rifles aren't bad. Much better than the semi-auto pieces of crap Remington still makes(7400)---2MG

Thank you for the input guys.

I'm encourgaged by what you have posted. My Dad and Brother both deer hunt with Model 88 in .308, so this is going to be kind of neat. All 3 of us will now be using similar .308's

Now I just wish I could shoot it. When I read the serial # to Winchester they said that one had not been fixed yet.
So, I'm not shooting it until that issue is resovled. It will be alot easier once I have it at the gunsmiths. Right now I can't hardly put the thing down.

I estimate it to be in about a 85-90% rating as far as quality. I don't think it has been shot much by looking at the end of the barrel.

Thanks again,

Sounds like you guys will be hunting with some cool rifles this year. All 308's too. It has long been my personal opinion that when ALL aspects are considered, either the 7mm-08 or the 308 are the best all-around whitetail calibers of all. I too will be using an 88 in 308 this year. I always have a back-up rifle with me also. Can't decide which it will be yet. Last time I hunted with the 88 it got so nasty out I left it at camp and took out my Sako Finnlight 7mm-08 and shot a deer on the way to my stand. I was tagged out and the 88 had to wait til next time---2MG
