I have the above referred gun and it shoots terrible groups. I'm shooting Winchester Supreme 55 Grain ballistic Silvertips. The scope is a Leupold VXIIc 4x12x40. I'm shooting out of a vise at 100yds. Getting 2" groups which are unacceptable by me. I should of bought another Tikka. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Heavier bullet maybe 95 Grain?

Shooting out of a vice????

Maybe try some sandbags... vices don't shoot guns very well.

That load will smoke a barrel fast on one of those rifles. If you didnt buy it new and know the round count thru the rifle I bet the barrel is a bout done. I would try other loads also, there are alot better bullet weights for the 243 calibers.

Chad thanks I never got into the reloading gig for bullets. mMaybe I will try the Winchester 95 grain supreme ballistic tips. I hope the barrel isn't smoked. I shoot it at 100 yds. then walk out and check target and walk back so its at least 8 min. between shots.

243wssm can sometimes only go about 1200 rounds ... right?

I had a Win70 featherweight in 22-250 several years back. It was probably the nicest looking rifle I've ever owned. Beautiful wood stock & it handled/shouldered like a dream. I never could become 100% satisfied with the way it shot. Although, this was before my reloading days & now it would have maybe been different. Anyway, long story short, I had to send it down the road due to it's performance. Gosh ... I do miss getting to hold that rifle & take a stroll through the fields or timber with it.

It is a wood stock. I'm thinking about trying heavier bullets. The trigger is adjusted all the way down by myself. It is a used rifle. I bought it off this site around 6/1/11. The previous owner said it was shot less than 100 times. I have shot it 50 times myself. Thanks any info would be greatly appreciated.

I just don't think the rifle likes that ammo. Try something in the 80 gr weight range and I bet it does better.

I'm new to the .243 but some rifles just refuse to shoot certain ammo.

And I'm a big Winchester fan, though I'm not big on the WSSM cartridges. That rifle should shoot better and I think it's the ammo more then anything.

If it has 150 rounds on the barrel... it is time to rebarrel it

I really get a kick out of anytime anybody sees WSSM, the first word that comes to mind is "barrel burner". Now say .220 Swift, .243 or 6mm, or .25-06 and people say they are great for their intended purpose. Meanwhile the WSSM's are their ballistic twins. So if the .243 WSSM is a barrel burner then so is the .243 or 6mm.

Back to the original post. I'd say you need to try a different load. Maybe try something heavier and see what happens.

I have shot rifles out of a Lead sled and I get better groups off of sand bags. You might do a thorough copper cleaning, really fast loads should shed more copper, just my take on it.

I lad for mine, mines also an AR though. It really likes the 85gr bullets. Id try the 95s. Most people say the bolts like the 55s more than the 95s. You may want to invest in a reloading set up to take advantage of the rest of the in between bullets. I tried some 70-75gr in mine but it really just settled in on the mid weights. Check the barrel for copper fouling.
Is the barrel floated or does it have the little pressure pad about 1.5" in on the end of the stock?

It is NOT the Winchester... it is the cartridge.

The WSSM family does not have a good reputation, whether in a Winchester or a Browning.

Why do u think people feel that way ? Why do u think they stopped clambering them? Well I hate to burst your bubble but they just kinda suck I had one and changed barrel and still hated it mostly because of the brass.

I have a 70 Featherweight Classic in .22-250, and also had one in .243 Winchester. My experience is that the light featherweight barrels will heat up very quickly. Mine will easily keep three shots under an inch, but will usually start spreading out by the time I reach five. My .22-250 loves Federal Premium 55 grain Game King HP's.
You should maybe try some heavier bullets in your rifle. I have a Remington 700 Mountain Guide with the same lightweight barrel as the 70 Featherweight. It won't shoot the 85 grain Sierra Game Kings I use in my 700 BDL to suit me, but it shoots 75 grain Sierra's very well.

Heavy bullets are harder on any barrel in any calibur, just because they go faster dont mean they are harder on barrels, bullet dwell time in the barrel.
