I saw a Winchester 70 Heavy Varmint for sell at a local shop in 223. I dont know anything about this rifle and was wondering what any of you might know???Value? Accuracy? It has a blue 26" heavy barrel and a synthetic stock. The stock looks like it may be an HS Precision or maybe a B&C, not real sure. It is in excellent condition, not showing much wear at all. Thanks in advance for any info.

I've had some experience with several model 70 varmints over the years and they were all great shooters. The odd thing was that two of them had headspace issues, once that was corrected they were good to go. Might want to have that checked before you buy, honestly it's a good thing to check on any used and sometimes new rifle.

Winchester is no longer making that rifle in any cal but 308. I have one of these that I purchased before they closed the old factory. It is one of my favorite rifles. If you want a nice varmint rig don't let it get away.

The early stealths had a stock by b&c while later had hs.

I had one in 22-250 is was a fantastic shooter till the groups started opening up after a few thousand rounds. Be careful buying used heavy barrels

I saw a used one at a show recently go for $550 and then one at a local gun shop used with a sticker of $850 on it. the value will depend on how bad you want it. I'd offer him $600 on it and he would probably take it. I don't think you'd have trouble selling it for that if you ended up not liking it.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I am going to make an offer on it and see what happens. It looks to be very clean and barely used so I am not too worried about the barrel and I would have a little play room in my budget for a good scope and possible gunsmithing. Thanks again

I see these occasionally selling for $525 to $850. Just depends how bad you want it. svt tactical gave you good advice, offer $600.

Mine needed no bedding work at all, came with a B&C stock. Lightened the trigger and it will shoot small groups all day long.
