Could you all rate the Winchester Model 70 in the 223. It states LWT in the heading not for sure what that stands for. It has a synthetic stock. Let me know what you guys think of this make and model---GOOD or BAD. Is it a good coyote/bobcat gun or would you reccomend something else. Let me know, Thanks in advance...Scott

Scott,

We really need more information to help you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'll give you a little advice but it may not apply to this rifle at all.

Winchester has made a model called the Model 70 Lightweight on and off for about 10 years. I've never seen it in a catalog or on their website but I've owned one and have seen several others.

The Lightweight is a 6.25lb rifle that often has a blued action and stainless barrel. I've only seen them with wood stocks and they have a 20" barrel with a light/thin contour but not as thin as a Model 7 or Ruger UltraLight.

I sure liked mine and used it for several years. It was a 22-250 and was surprizingly accurate and very handy to carry.

It was my main predator rifle for all those years and I've not had one I liked as much ever since. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It's a lousy rifle! To show you what a great guy I am, I'll send you $100.00 and you send me the rifle. That way we'll both be happy! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Scott47,
Accuracy is the key to any varmint rifle. Does it shoot consistantly with the loads you want to use. Lot's of work on the rifle range will tell you if the rifle is worth keeping. If it shoots to your satisfaction then the Winchester model 70 is the right one for what you want it to do. Just remember, the .223 is a medium range varmint cartridge. With a velocity of about 3100 fps for the 50 grain bullet you should be able to keep your groups around the 1" size, sighted in at 1" to 1 1/2" high at 100 yards. This should give you a point blank range out to about 250 yards with out any hold-over on a target the size of a coyote. An adult coyote will measure about 7 inches from the top of the shoulders to it's brisket. If you have to consistantly shoot at longer ranges then 250 yards then step up to the 22-250 or 220 swift or even the newer cartridges that have been developed in the last few years.
I hope this helps. Just remember, accuracy is the key for far fewer frustrating days hunting the very smart coyote.

Scott,
I have a Win model 70 "coyote model" in 22-250 caliber. I am fairly impressed with this gun, although it doesnt shoot as well as my Kimber, for about half the price it more than does the job. Overall I think the smooth action and wide trigger are my favorite aspects of this rifle.

rustydog has offered to take that club off your hands and give you a 100.00 to boot?Very generous and in the spirit of the season i would be more than happy to take the old winchester club off you and will even throw in 110.00 cause its almost xmas(if it shoots well keep it)
