winchester sx3

I did a search and found some old posts about how it cycles all loads well and is a great gun and so on and so forth. Didnt see anything about how it does in cold weather.

I hunt waterfowl in nebraska and it gets darn cold late season. My dads old 11-87 stops working in the cold. He wants to update his duck slayer but not if newer auto loaders run like his current one.

Do they still run good in the cold?

Thanks.

Just go benelli/beretta if you want a reliable auto-loader. Of course the new Remington versa max is almost an exact copy of benelli's inertia system and rotating bolt so that seems to be a viable option also. They are definitely worth the money. On the cheap a Stoeger auto uses the same benelli inertia system and I believe Beretta is releasing a new low priced option auto loader; the name and model number escape me right now.

Guns not working in cold weather is usually related to the oil you use. Make sure to use a good quality oil that will not thicken in cold weather.

The franchi affinity is made in the same plant as the benelli m2 and is almost the exact gun for about 700 bucks.

The sx3 is the same as a browning gold/silver and has a great reputation for reliability. I would go for it if it fits you. CDNN has wood or synthetic for about 700.

Actually the SX3 was designed by FN, and assembled in Portugal,
if I recall correctly. The Golds/Silvers were made in Japan.
I have a Gold 10, a SX3 20ga, and a Maxus 3.5" 12 ga. The
SX3 and the Maxus are VERY similar. But both are quite
different than my Gold. Basically FN engineering went into
both, but the Maxus has a magazine cutoff, and the SX3
doesn't. Which is really an unnecessary feature. Also the
Maxus loads through the magazine, as does the SX3 20 ga., but
not the SX3 12 ga. I guess they want to sell you a Maxus if
one wants all of the bells and unnecessary whistles. But to
the reliability, I have hunted both the SX3 and the Maxus, as
well as my Gold 10, for waterfowl, and have never experienced
a malfunction. But I keep my shotguns clean and very lightly
lubed with MPro7(cold weather lube).

I also have a Rem. 11-87, and I have never had cold weather
failures with mine...And I have hunted it in blinding
blizzards duck, and deer, hunting. But I know what it means
to lust after a new shotgun, and the Winchester SX3 is a fine
choice.

FWIW, I watched a Benelli go "Click" in the duck blind
recently...Repeatedly. The owner was not a happy Benelli
owner. So if it is mechanical, even the mighty Benelli
can FAIL. Proper maintenance, and regular inspection for
worn or broken parts, along with light cold weather lube
will go along way towards happy shotgunning.

Me either...Well at least the Maxus versus the Rem. 11-87.
The 11-87/1100 has about an inch more drop, which just
fits me so much better. The Maxus comes with a shim to
add more drop, but it still is about 1/2" higher. I shot
trap 2 years ago with the 11-87, and had a 23.25 out of a
possible 25 average, and got top gun for my team. I purchased
a Maxus to get both the 3.5" chamber(for turkeys), and a
lighter shotgun as I am getting long in the tooth.

I still swing my Gold 10ga, but at 10.25lbs, there will be a
day that the 6 lb 14 oz Maxus swings better. I shot the Maxus
last year, in trap league, and my average fell to less than 20.

I added weight to the magazine tube, and shimmed
the stock for more drop, and the average was climbing by
the end of the season, but it still doesn't fit me like
my 11-87. I shot the Maxus some in waterfowl hunting
this year, and we are getting use to each other, but picking
up the 11-87 is like shaking hands with an old friend.

The SX3 and the Silver do have the exact same operating system but the externals are different.

I own four SX3's and a Maxus but I shoot the SX3's better.

I had a sx3 for a while. It would in fact cycle everything i put through it. I did have trouble with it one day due to cold weather. Could have very well been the clp i used though. I don't use near as much these days. As soon as i would get a couple rounds through it, it was a non issue again. Ended up getting rid of it mostly because it didn't point well for me.

Lots of guys don't like the stoeger m3000, but i have had nothing but good experiences with it. Worked great during dove season. Took a 4 day weekend for opening duck season this weekend. Ended up leaning on a branch that snapped like a dummy and my gun went in the mud and water. Wiped it down and drained the water, and it was a non issue the rest of the day. The wet waiders on the other hand, sucked!
