Wolf and Frontier 223 brass Primer pockets reaming ?

Lodgepole

I am a new AR owner .A friend has one and does not reload ,he is scattering brass EVERYWHERE and cheepie me picks it up.Is there a easy way to tell if the pockets need reaming without using a reaming tool ?I do not have one and won't get to the city for some time and want to reload a few. I have had a 223 bolt rifle for years but always had brass that I bought new and not primed .

Thanks ,I just bought a head band with a magnifier glass ,I need all the help I can get to see the marks. arlaunch that tool will tell me if they need the crimp removed and I need something else (reamer ) to remove it ?

I use this to remove crimps

It is more or less a knock off of the original Dillon swager.

These tools are fast. I go from a full bucket of cases that need it on my left to an empty bucket of the ones i swaged on the right.

I use this to trim the brass

It is not without problems though.... Since it trims off of head space your die needs to be permanently set or you will get different trim length numbers. Also if brass pieces accumulate (they often do..) you will get sometimes large variations in trim length.

$200 and something already.

If you are picking up your buddies brass and it has a NATO emblem on it, it is likely crimped. With the exception that it could be re manufactured.

If that is the case, throw it into the garbage. Who knows what its been through.....

For me, LC NATO brass only. And only if i bought it as factory ammo, shot it from my rifle and kept track of its history.

Reloading is to much work for lackluster performance.

IMO....

Everybody is different.

The Wolf 223 brass I've seen has a crimp like you wouldn't believe-I've never seen anything close to it. Thankfully I have the Dillon swager!!

I have reloaded the Wolf and like it so far. Had to ream the pockets, but I have a Franklin Arsenal prep station with pocket reamer so this isn't a problem. I have used my hand reamer many times in the past to clean out crimped primer pockets though. Rudy

I wouldn't ream the primer pockets.

You just need to remove the crimps.

Some primer pocket reamers take away to much brass and you will end up with loose primers much quicker than if you hadn't reamed the primer pockets.
