Good luck with the hunt and look forward to some pics.

Thanks for that Dogman, appreciate it. I'm stoked for this one, can't wait. I'll post the hunt plan elsewhere here in the hopes of additional feedback. Haven't hunted wolves at all and only a little bit of predators in general. Anything I can learn will help!

I bought a 16" Grendel several years ago. I have been impressed with this caliber ever since I have read about it. I use a 120gr Sierra Pro hunter and the 120gr Nosler Ballistic tip. I haven't shot anything other than a single coyote with this rifle. The Pro hunter had a nice quarter size exit hole on the offside just behind the shoulder. The nice thing about the Grendel is you don't need to use a premium bullet since velocities are not high enough to cause bullet failure. With that said I would feel comfortable shooting larger game with this combo. I bought a box of the 120gr TTSX bullets to try out in my 6.5x55 as well as the Grendel but just haven't had a chance to load them.

There is a guy on another forum that created the 6.5PCC I think it's called. Basically a 5.56 case necked up to 6.5mm. The ballistics are near the Grendel.
There are several great cartridges for use on the AR platform. The 6.8SPC would work well also. If you are a 30 cal fan then maybe a 30AR would work.

For the 7mm my favorite bullets are in order 1. barnes ttsx 2. nosler partition 3. nosler acubond as far as what is the most fur friendly ??? I can tell you that when I shot the blackbear with the accubond it had about a 1" exit wound but it passed through at a quartering away angle, for what it is worth. all 3 will stay together really well at high velocity. I have never heard of a ttsx failing, everytime I have shot anything with them they work as advertised... AWESOME!

If I had to use an AR to hunt wolf or bear I would definately go for an AR-10 and I think I would like to have one in 7mm-08 or 260 remington/ 6.5x55.

If you are trying to save the fur I would say 17 mach II if you want instant death the 17 HMR. I think the 17 WSM and the 17 Hornet are way to much for a little ole wolf.

Ya, the HMR is the load that I always recommend, especially to beginners!

Those guys that insist on using deer rifles just don't have a clue!

ha, I have a 17 hmr and I love it but the first fox I shot with it (@255 yrds) I realized it had nowhere near the power of its internet legend, the fox spun circles chasing its tail like it had been stung by a wasp on the butt...I tracked that thing for what seem like ever (it would have been my 1st fox) and never found him, just a patch of blood here and there. its my crow shooting gun now

back on topic, from all the answers I would say pretty much anything 6mm/243 and up will be just fine, there sooo many great rounds and bullets out there now that the options are endless

My choices are:
45 ACP 185gr Speer Gold Dot
41 MAG 210gr Sierra JHP
223 Rem 53gr HP
243 Win 70gr Blitz or 100gr SBT
6mm Rem 75gr HP or 100gr SBT
257 WBY 110gr AB
270 Win 130 SPBT
7mm Rem Mag 145gr SBT, 154gr SP, or 160gr SBT
308 Win 150gr SP
300 Wby 180gr SBT
300 RUM 150gr SP or 208gr AMAX

In WA State wolves are protected, so all I can do is be watchful, aware, and confident with whatever was in my hands, but respectful of the law of the land. I hear rumors of wolves where I mule deer hunt, but have never actually seen one. If it were legal here in WA, I would choose my clip fed Tikka T3 Lite in 270 Win 130gr SBT in a nano second.

6mm rem-7mm rem mag would be my choice. Any of them would put down a wolf with proper shot placement. That said the 300 RUM might be a smidge too much gun unless you're shooting one at 1000 yds. I saw a wolf with cubs on the coast range in Oregon couldn't believe my eyes. Probably more sightings of Sasquatch than wolves in the coast range.

Onebreath- We've shot a few wolves with hotter 30cal rounds than the 300 RUM and they just fell over and died. No overkill... shots were 380yds,385yds, 400yds. They were 30-378 Weatherby and 308 Lazzeroni Warbird. Also a few with 300 RUM.

We shot two one week with a 6mm Rem that killed well but left something to be desired. Shooting 100gr Corelokt bullets out of a 26in barrel we had no exits on a 270yd and a 150yd broadside shot. These were probably 90lb wolves for reference. Nice to have a little blood on the ground for tracking especially if the block of woods was tracked up earlier in the morning by an entire pack.

This is good info right here. Especially since the OP was looking at 6x45 as an option (and 223 for some reason).
The 6mm Rem moves the same bullet a Whole Bunch faster than the 6x45 can ever dream of.

Headed to Jackson buffalo hunting in the next couple months. I will be bow hunting my buffalo but will be packing my 6.5 creadmore and my .300wsm. Can't be overgunned

Displayed Name...Were These two running together (6mm wolves)? My original thought was that where wolves are generally pack animals the likelihood of seeing more than one at a time is probably pretty good. So an AR platform might make sense for getting a quick follow up shot on retreating pack members.

While the 6X45 makes the best sense for being able to find a lot brass to form. The 6.5 Grendel probably is the better choice for stopping a wolf. Follow-up shots will be quicker with a 6X45.

If seeing wolves in groups is not that common. I have a pretty good stable of bolt guns to choose from.

I would consider an AR 10 platform in 260 or 243. But from what I hear AR 15s are unwieldy enough. After I get done hunting wolves, this will turn into a coyote rifle. So, I prefer to stay with the AR 15 platform. I could just plan on a .223 upper later I guess.

Thanks to everyone for the input on this!
Mark

No they were seperate, the first was pushed out of a bush by me on snowshoes and shot at 150yds, the second was called in and shot on the way back out of town at 270yds.

You may be fine especially if you pick your shots just saying bigger guns punch more, more damage on poor shots, more range and don't really mess them up that bad.

I've seen some really accomplished shooters with the best of the best gear blow gimme shots... so shooter error can happen to everyone. Hit em hard if you nic em.
