Wolves

Is it hard to call a wolf in with a rabbit in disstress mouth call?I have to get him into .22LR range.Would a ear or neck shot be good?

I havent had any experience with wolves in my time but Im going to imagine if you have a wolf problem or anything like that, a rabbit in distress call probably work. Now on your caliber of a gun I would have to strongly disagree. A .22 LR is not enough power and is inhumane. You would be much better off with a centrefire (.223, .243 etc).

I agree with Moe.

I have never hunted wolves. But I believe that any center fire would be a MUCH wiser choice. Are you allowed to use centerfires? How about a Shotgun and buckshot?

I was planning on selling the hide.I know it is alot to small but I heard of trappers taking them down with this gun but in this shot you have to be very skilled or get a bigger gun.If you haven't noticed i'am planning on getting a bigger gun. Also how big of a hole would a .410 slug put in the hide?

I have hunted wolves, and been out Doggin for a lot of people. The outfitter I used to work for used to tell the hunters "no less than a 150 grain..." 'cause they aint gonna stand there 20 m away and let you shoot'em. We hope to have people use their standard deer rifle. Big hole = down fast(humane and less work for us). I know you'll poke a big hole in the hide, but the trappers are real close (20 feet or less) when they shoot them in the head. If you see one, it'll be moving, and quite likely far away.

We've had hunters come up with 22-250, and 25-06 and I'd say unless you're a good shot, go bigger. Those hunters had broadside shots at 120m or so, and we chased two wounded animals for a few km (on snowshoes)before we lost them.

As for calling, I'm trying to call wolves on distress calls and coyote howls right now, and it's real hard. Wolves cover soooo much area that even if there are wolves in your hunting area often, you likely won't be in the right place at the right time, unless you're baiting, and that's a pile of work.

Good luck, and please don't try to shoot a wolf with a .22lr.

Good advice Danno, I've shot plenty with 22LR but thats when I've got them at the end of a snare or chain.

I've never called in a wolf but I've known people that have up here in Alaska. They are reluctant to come into distress calls primarily since they don't eat'em. When your a wolf, a little rabbit is an appetizer at best. Not worth the risk especially when they smell something fishy or out of place, like a tree brandishing a gun.

The people that have been successful calling wolves usually do it with a series of mouth howls. Its an art that's for sure. They'll do their series of howls, wait for a response. Answer back after a given amount of time and get in position to make some shots.

Redfrog, good to be here. Just reading and learning mostly. Good information.

Varmit....I know it can happen. Seen people cause the demise of a bear with a 22LR and its happened to a moose now and then. I guess that doesn't make it the correct weapon of choice.

22 Mag is the preferred choice among villagers in a certain area of Northern Alaska in getting their yearly supply of caribou. Of course they're just driving their boats up to them while they're swimming the river.

Hey Dean maybe I've got to have to just show you how to call in a wolf or two!! And no I didn't open the package that had your new loudmonth in it either. Hee Hee tempted but no...

Ralph L. stopped by your place yesterday. Think I've got him ready for calling some coyotes! Did a demo or two. We swapped tales & lies for an hour or so.

Hey John,

So this is where you get all the good pointers from, good forum. I just found it with a few spare minutes I have at work:). We have a couple months left to get us some wolves. We've got the plane, just need the time.

See you next week. I'll let you know how the loudmouth works out.

Dean - I know that you are stand bye on those wolves. Good luck there!! If you get time bring your snogo up (oh and the call that I didn't open!!) and maybe we can get lucky on the taylor. Six packs there but we need them machines to get there. Got the dawson groups going and they mess up the area just a bit. But watch the drive up bou all over the place at mile 45 or so and 81 coming up.

Remind me to tell you about the wolf calling stuff. Trayl was with me when we did one over at west fork. Oh and I impressed Ricardo when he was here with them yelling at us!!

Wolves can be called in, Your setups that are successful will be few and far between.
You can hunt a week and call in several packs and only actually see one or two animals.
Our experiance has been in areas of overlapping wolf/coyote territory. We have harvested both and called in many feline specie as well.
If your looking to hunt large carnivore don't be an idiot and carry anything less then a centerfire. By centerfire i mean rifle not a 4-10 shotgun. My kills are posted in the photo album.

I have tried to call wolves in with distress calls on several occasions, even when the wolves were where I could see them. I have sat on a ridge where I could see several wolves running the river and they were totally un-interested.

As far as the twenty-two goes, DON'T USE A 22! You will be very disapointed with the results.

Stick with a center fire .22, pelt damage will be minimal with the right bullet. Do a search in the Firearms & Reloading Forum for loads and bullets for fur.

I wouldn't hesitate shooting a wolf with a .223 (with quality >55 grain hunting bullets), but I'd be much more confident about it if the shot was less than 150 yards.

I've never done it, though. I've used the trusty 30-06. That works pretty good.

for what it's worth...the paniced wolf leaving the country at 100 yards was no match for the heat seeking bullet from the .223 that hammered him. even though he was dead, he didn't know it as he slid a dozen feet on the river ice with a 2-inch snow cover. but the .223 did the job. can't speak for the .22 LR, but know that anything larger than the .223 should work...my only experience with Old Yellow Eyes and fire power is with the .223 and my trusy .06. Best for lots of wolf harvesting. may i suggest that you help the citizens of idaho and montana eliminate as many of them as possible, as well as Mr. Grizzly? Skylar Bear

We went hunting wolves...I don't think they exhist! I did hear something that sounded like what they say wolves sound like and I saw big dog tracks, but I never saw any.!

Gosh all this heavy hard ware maybe we need a 20 mike mike or a bradley tank gosh and all i use is my 17 wild cat my 224 Clark and my 6.5 X 300 WHM I guess I need to sell them all and buy a 50BMG heck take out three wolves, a moose in the woods behind them a bou on the hill and a ice worm all in one shot.

On the honest side a 22 rimfire is not the cal for sure but of those nine wolves in that poast six were taken with my 17 VLR from 50 yards to 300 and just fell like a house fell on them two were taken with the Clark and one with the 6.5 But with the Bradley I bet we could take out the whole pack and look for gold too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif have a good one >>>

The Bradley wouldn't leave much for the fur marketing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

But your rifles are pretty impressive sounding, Slayer.

Do you use frangible bullets? Do you know if they work as talked about (enter, break apart, provide great killing power, and rarely exit)?

Do you sit at a stand with both the 17 and the 224?
