Woodchuck Pictures

I am new to the forum so I thought I would toss up some of my woodchuck photos from last year. I am starting to see these guys poking their heads up from the fields of snow.

I am shooting a Ruger .17 Hmr and a Remington 700 .222

Nice, I have a few on a disposable camera, from last summer. I'll get them developed and try to post some soon. I can't wait til they start coming out around here this year. I'm ready to put the "Smoke" to a few.

Nice going, Adam. That's a bunch.

How is the Ruger 17 HMR shooting, group wise? What ammo did you use for the groundhogs?

David

I am able to cover a 5 shot grouping at 100 with a quarter. Throw in some wind and it opens up a bit. I am shooting the 17 grain Hornady V Max as I find my gun likes them best. The Federals shoot alright as well.

Welcome Adam, I remember you from another forum last year. Hope to compare notes with you as the groundhog season progress's. Stay with us now. Sending you a (PM) Private Message.

KOLBY- They're true varmint

Hunting groundhogs is equavilent to hunting your Prairie Dogs or Armidillos, the value is only that they are gone. They are hunted hard in some areas due to the crop damage they inflict on soybeans, hayfields and such. They provide great off season shooting for those interested in shooting smaller critters at longer ranges.

They are not hunted for their table fare or fur. For instance:

I had purchased the gun used from a local shop and it came all set up like that already. From what I understand he used the regular Ruger pad and put in a white spacer. It fits me nice so I kept it as is.

As for what I do with my woodchucks, I place them in a fence row for coyotes, fox and vultures to feast on. Shooting them is a win-win situation for myself, the landowners, and predators getting a free meal.

Thanks didnt really know but that makes since prairie dogs tear up everything. good hunting

In my neck of the woods, some of the Old Timers cook and eat them. If done right, they taste like chicken (but what doesn't) but I never learned how. Tried to cook them once, the dog wouldn't even eat them so I gave up. They can do a lot of damage to the fields and crops so the farmers like it when we shoot them. Even land that is posted NO HUNTING will usually let you hunt groundhogs.
