Woodchuck with rabies?

Not too sure which forum to place this in, but wondering if a chuck that has been in my yard most of the afternoon has rabies. It walks in circles and falls over occasionally. Doesn't appear to have any wounds. I'd take care of it myself if I didnt live in town.

Coons get distemper around here and act the same way. There is canine and feline. Don't know which can get what. Some can get both.

I'd put a bullet in it and bury it where it won't get dug up by the family dog or double bag it and hit a dumpster.

I had the same thing happen one time way back when I was in high school and at my girl friend's house with a raccoon in her back yard. I used a rope to lasso it and threw the rope over a tree limb and proceeded to hang it. just be ready with a shovel in the event he wants to attack you. make sure there are no peta types around watching...

Nope, not rabies. Groundhogs don't get rabies. That's distemper you're seeing. Don't expect any animal control or law enforcement official to bother with it, though. The "wildlife" dept. folks here in my state would rather shoot the (now) healthy fawn my cancer-stricken sister-in-law stitched back together after she amputated its leg while mowing hay; also fine her and jail her. Figure that one out.

I shot a gray fox one time that showed up in my grandmother's yard and wouldn't leave. It hung around quite a while, acting strange. She phoned me and it took several minutes for me to drive to her place. The fox was still there when I arrived, so I shot it, then used gloves and buried it well.

I've heard some here say that fox can get "drunk" from eating polk berries, which is a possibility for that fox, but I didn't take any chances.

It's hard to say about your groundhog. I have never heard of that before, but who knows.

It's failry common for small animals like that to get a parasite in their brain area that drives them crazy, thus resulting in the activity your seeing.

Yes, you are correct and I was wrong; didn't mean to pass on information that could possibly cause someone to ignore a rabid creature. However, rodents are less likely to contract rabies than other animals.
