I'm stoked! I found out last night a buddy and I both drew Mt Goat tags on Kodiak, Island AK. We'll be heading up in late October for a combination Goat and Sitka Blacktail hunt. I'm counting the days.

Awesome, good luck and watch out for the brown four legged things that live there also. I spent a week there fishing, one day I would like to go back and do what your gonna do.

I got drawn for Zachar Bay. Hunt number DG475. I lived in Anchorage for 10 years. I was up there in 2005 for a sheep hunt. It made me miss it so I decided to put in for this goat tag. Didn't draw last year, but was lucky this year. I've got a new .325 WSM and I think I'll take that along. I shot a black bear with it last year and it hammered him.

Congrats!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Please, please keep us posted. How do you go about putting in for a tag?
I look forward to the draws every year here in WA. The only thing I don't like is the draws are not posted until late summer, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif doesn't give you much time to get ready for a once in a lifetime hunt.
Here is a little inspiration until October.

Zachar bay, That looks to be some pretty rugged country. Good Hunting! I'll bet your WSM will do just fine. Who's taking you in ? If you would like I can recommend a couple of air services.
Needless to say I'm very envious!

Our preliminary plans are to stay at the Zachar Bay Lodge (for the deer portion of the hunt). They have a plane that flys from Kodiak to their lodge. We'll get them to shuttle us to the head of the bay and take off with our back packs from there. We're planning 7-10 days for the goat hunt. We're both Alaska residents in the military. I'd expect nothing less than rugged for a goat hunt. We've both killed goats before and have hunted the mountains often. We'll be ready. Have you hunted the west side of Kodiak before?

Sounds like you have it figured out! I have not hunted the west side much. I drew a goat tag in 2000 for the terror lake area, We did not connect with a goat but what a great trip!
One thing I can tell you is that radio comms can be a bit touchy and I would recommend a mini B epirb. The Coast Guard air station will respond and it's about a 30 min. flight (weather dependant) to your general area. If you can't get one bring a radio and check with the pilot that takes you to the lodge what common freq's the air services use. Outside of that I'll spare you the weather and terrain lectures.
If you happen to go by the ferry landing in down town Kodiak you should still be able to see the claw marks left by me and my family when the Coast Guard transfered us out.

ButcherBoy,
You can put in for a tag online through the Alaska Fish and Game website. The draws for sheep and goat end on Dec 6th and the results are posted before Feb 15th. To hunt sheep, goat and brown bear in Alaska as a non-resident, you MUST use a guide. As I mentioned before we are both Alaska residents so we'll being doing it ourselves. If you're interested in just a deer hunt you can buy a license and tags over the counter. I believe you're able to harvest 3 blacktails, but the bag limit changes occasionally. If you're interested I'd recommend you visit the AK F&G website and do some browsing around there. There's also a good site called Alaska Hunting Forum that has good information.

I drew this tag in 2005, a friend of a friend drew it in 2006. If you are going to hunt from the lodge, prepare to do some brush busting. Hope you guys are tough. You might want to get a hold of Roland at Seahawk Air and fly into the higher elevation lakes to avoid the brush busting. We lucked out again this year and drew for DG477. I also suggest renting a sat phone. The weather on Kodiak changes drastically. If you have a sat phone, you can keep in touch with the flight service and know when they are able to pick you up. Nothing like having all your gears packed, tent rolled up, sitting in the rain and wait, and wait, and wait for the plane but it's not coming in because of bad weather. They are also nice for emergencies. You can rent the phone in ANC for about $100 a week. Good luck on your hunt.
