17 dogs won us first
11 took second Everet and Chandler Miller Orem Utah
10 took third forgot their names(sorry) Delta Utah
9 took fourth Garret Carr and Partner St George Utah
What do you say but wow, what a contest we had a heck of a good time and even though the weather was tough I think most guys had fun. Me and Garvin got on a roll right out of the gate and never looked back.
Stand one no coyotes show
Stand two, right out of the gate I see a running dog away from us, dont know if it saw us set up or what but 10 min into the call a small male shows up 80 yds and a 55 gr balistic silvertip starts our world hunt off 7:18 dog down not bad.
Stand three was so cool, a sloping hill with a railroad track cut right through it. Garvin on the right me to the left with the new PM-4 75 yds west, played the grown cottontail for 50 seconds a hard chargin male shows up that fast and with no time to switch guns I stick with the rifle and proceed to miss at 30 yds, the coyote not knowing where the shot came from turns and burns right at me, the second shot when I saw fir in the scope again puts him down exactly ten yds from me I think dangit, use the shotgun stupid. As I am scolding myself for almost blowing it I look Garvins way and see a small female ghosting in to Garv, I kiss and point, Garv sees and adjusts to make the shot, she checks up at 100 yds and I see the bullet strike through her dog two at two min.s on stand. Keep playing GC and8-10 min in I see a coyote at 120 yds just standing there. dont know how long it stood there but a quick adjustment to the sticks and we had dog three for the stand on the ground. As I continued to call a pair open up and howl less then 400 yds away to the west then a single howls straight north and another to the NE opens up three down and 4 howling at us, I threw the kitchen sink at em for another 5 mins, but to no avail they would not get any closer 3 stands 4 dogs not bad.
Stand four is 3/4 of a mile down the tracks and this time I set up on the lip, Garv is to the east 70 yds down wind I called for seven mins when I see a pair coming down the oposite side of the tracks, not knowing if they would commit I stuck to the rifle. At 50 yds the male leading the two checks up looking for a way down and across the tracks I tilt my head to look through the scope and he nuts up on me looking hard right at me, I did the only thing I could think of an made sure I killed him, upon report the female takes off from 0-60 in no time next shot misses her but the third shot hit her right in the side of the noggin 4 stands 6 yotes.
Stand five looked real good with pinyon, juniper mix to an open flat. five mins in a nice looking dog comes right to the PM-4 60 yds she starts going downwind and I barked she checked up and we had #7 at 10-1/2 mins I see two crows 20 yds up off the deck coming right in at a 125 they dip and go nuts right under them is dog #8 looking right at me head on, I centered the hairs and sent him packing to the promised land 5 stands 8 coyotes
Stand # 6 was my only glitch I unloaded the Benelli at the truck to move as we always do I just forgot to reload we walked under the tracks to set up this time and Garv was to my right 50 yds and 3-4 min into the stand I see a coyote burning in to the caller 20 yds in front of me when I barked to stop him at 22 I centered the benelli and click no bullet $%&* I drop the shotgun and go for my rifle when I hear Garv pull the trigger, but my dog is still up and moving so I commence firing to no avail I think we miss him and Garv says I got mine what happened to yours $%&* I says I clicked he goes and gets the one he killed at 230 yds when he heard me click he killed the second one coming knowing I would get mine, still not bad6 stands 9 dogs and one vegetarian left out there I doubt he will ever respond to a dying rabbit again, in fact a loud fart will probably send him a packin.
Stand #7 was cool we approached a change of terrain a mesa to a valley the tracks cut right through and we set up to the north of the tracks as they bent west, Garv downwind of me and the caller 60 yds 4 min in Garv goes to barkin and a bouncer that was within 10 yds of him stops and he put him down another 4 mins and a second dog circles in and about the time he is to get the wind Garv proceeds to vent him too 7 stands 11 coyotes we were a grinning.
Stands 8,9,10, went dry for us we headed north on a power line and the wind and rain picked up a little.
Stand eleven was cool in that we called for 8-10 mins and a coyote is coming right to us I hear the lip sqeek from garv and look at him trotting in, as soon as he hears the lip sqeek he gets hinky and takes off trotting to a ravine that hides him out to 180 yds a jackrabbit flushes at the coyotes feet and the race is on out to 220. I bark and the big male checks up broadside I decide to help my gun and you guessed it I hit right where I am aiming nothin but air, that coyote hits mach 10 about the time the second and very lucky bullet smacks him in the left cheek, a third and fourth bullet anchor our #12.
12-13 are dry but Stand 14 is on our way back to the south and the wind is steady out of the south now and fairly strong I guess 8-12 maybey 15 at most mph. We creep over the saddle and set up and can see for miles trees and rocks to both sides east and west and valley to the tracks a mile away. I walk the caller 20 yds away in a senise bush and start the GC, 30 seconds into it I see what I though was a tail jumping into the road at 100 yds, then a bird flys up and heads my way, whew I thought it was a coyote 10 seconds later garv is kissing I look in the road and a coyote is closing from 50 yds I $%&* I had seen a coyote and I cant move to get a shotgun now, so I slowly reach for my shotgun with my right hand, garv is 40 yds to my right and he is just grinning watching this whole deal go down as the coyote gets to the speaker and boogs, I switch and commence firing, 4 rounds later he is healthy as the day he was born I missed all 4 shotgun blasts, garv goes into save mode and commences firing, I drop the benneli and go to work with the rifle and at 250 3rd rifle round I hit him sqare between the shoulder blades goin like hell, what luck to miss him with a shotgun and clean him up running wow, dog 13 down at 2:00 PM
Stand 15-16 are dry but 17 looks like the perfect stand trees and bluffs 500-1000 yds spreading to the south, and 10 minutes into the stand I look at garv to see if he wants to go, he sticks up 2 fingers 12 mins it is. At 12 min I shut the caller off and start to get up when garv kisses, pair tounges hangin out coming hard I set back down and grab a rifle, bad choice as they are running in, as the male comes right by the speaker out there at 25 yds he smells where I walked and turbos up the hill at me, I drop the rifle and commence once again to run the benneli dry again, I watch as the pattern consumes the coyote but he keeps on a truckin, I pick up the rifle and let em rip Garv runs his rifle dry on the female and she is still running, only dog he missed for the run, I decide I need sticks to kill this dog at 350 as he checks up out there I grab my sticks and look for him no dog, I ask garv if he saw him lay down and he askes me how in the HE%% did we let a pair live I say I bet mine that I covered up a couple times with the buckshot is dead we run out there with our bennelis and look where I last saw him and tucked up next to a senise bush is dog 14 dead as a rock, I remember thinkin [beeep] it would be alot easier if I killed em closer to the truck but its ok 14 coyotes in the truck 17 stands down.
They gave us 15 blocks to use and our goal was to get rid of all the blocks we had 2 more hours of light but the wind picked up another 5-10mph and the next 4 stands were a bust some of our best looking and most sign areas I think had we had to deal with that wind the whole time our total would have been cut in half. The wind blew in a thundercell that rained like a cow pissin on flat rock it got everything wet but as fast as it blew in it was over and the wind receeded back down to mild 10 mph stand 22 was a great looking stand and we only had light for one maybey two if we cut to 8-10 min stands, 8 min in no show we ran to the truck and too stand 23
23 was a grass flat in the middle of a bunch of PJ about 200yds long and 150 across, 4 min into it garv kisses and right down mainstreet strolled #15 At eighty yds I couldnt take it and anchored him to end the block sauga, we high fived as we blocked him and garv says we got time for one more.
24 was alot smaller opening in the trees and we set up quick garv took the caller 15 yds from him and I went downwind 2 1/2 minutes into the call I see a coyote bouncing right up to Garv, he grabs the ole M1 pistol grip and killed 16 12 yds from him with a 3 1/2 inch load of love, we put the shotgun shell in the mouth of the coyote and duct taped it closed (as per the rules when you run out of blocks you use the empty case) we jetted down the draw and tried to make one more stand but the light was fading way fast and we called for another 8-10 minutes but nothing showed.
Our best day ever to this one was 12 coyotes, to kill 16 in one day and do it for the World was really, really cool we ran for a phone and some dinner we did not stop for anything all day, and we ran from stand to truck truck to stand.
The wind blew in that night with rain and lightning, at daybreak we started another line of stands but with 40-50 mile an hour sustained light breeze we had a tough go, at 8:45 we walked out on ridge and began to call 3 minutes in a coyote runs right up to Garv and he anchored # 17, we made 5 stands before 17 and three after and had we had that wind the day before I doubt if we would have killed 5 coyotes in that area.
We ran for checkin and made it official, It was my best contest ever as I only missed one, Garv only missed one and I forgot to mention the one we took a long shot at that we saw while driving from one stand to another but I dont count him really, 19 called in dogs, 17 in the truck and one we took a poke at as we rolled by. It was a great run and I hope you liked the play by play. We used the new PM-4 wireless preymaster, used the Grown Cottontail, and had tremendous success, Thanks for the good words and I hope you can all come to the World Coyote Calling Contest it is open to the world you just have to know somebody and now that you know me just drop my name or give the folks in Cortez Colorado a buzz and get entered for next year I think they said Dec 6-7-8- that might not be right and I will post info for who to call and a number so if you think this is something you want to do and trust me you will want to do this once in your life you can enter the greatests predator calling championship on the planet.
