Would you recommend shooting sticks?

Would you guys recommend shooting sticks or is it just add to the things you need to carry? I know they work well for a steady rest but how many of you guys actually use them?
Mark

Most definetly! I always have sticks or bipods. Especially for those shots over a hundred yards. If you start using them, your percentages will go way up!

I made a set myself that I carry everywhere. I tried the bipod thing and they just aren't very good when terrain isn't flat. I made my own shooting stock from two pieces of trim that were 1/2"x1/2". I ran a small bolt and wingnut through a hole that I drilled about 1/4 of the way up. I finished them off with a camo job with a leaf pattern. They work a lot better in any given situation than a bipod for me.

Yes on the shooting stix, I don't like the bipods the are clumbsy to use for me anyway, I have 2 different bipods and haven't used them in years.

Shooting sticks are great. Never leave home home without em. There are many ways to make your own for only a couple dollars. It you make your own, Make them so that folded up they can double as a walking stick. Mine are perfect for this and it is real nice in steep areas

two unfleched arrows and a couple of sheep castration bands and you are good to go. I tape the top of the arrows so there is no noise. Way better than a bipod for my application.
A heck of a lot cheaper than those you can buy....Kelly

I would post a pic, but having troubl with photobucket tonight.

Two 3/8" dowel rods from Ace Hardware and a rubber band. Put a camo job on them with some spray paint and foliage of your enviroment and you're good to go.

I always use them.

I have several sets, homemade and storebought, but I like the pole cat tripod set-up with the extra piece to hold the butt of my rifle. I can have my rifle setting more or less pointed downrange while I'm using binoculars. If one comes in from the side etc it's easy to shift POI and collapse the third leg as I put my off side hand up to grip the "notch".

I don't use my shooting sticks no more, I'm not so old I can't sit against a tree crunched up and rest my forearms on my legs. If I need to be any steadier I'll lay prone with my bipod.

Hey t/c, I'd love to see you try to sit against one of our trees, LOL. For that matter, sitting on the ground can get a little pointy too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't sit on a stand without shooting sticks. Any stands where I forgot them in the jeep, I end up finding a stick to help steady, but still feel totally uncomfortable without my sticks.

He's from up in North Cali.

Leon's right T/C, you wouldn't be laying too much on the ground around here and the only trees we have can put holes in you that will bleed for hours.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
