Hopefully this thread will keep going. I wanted to start a thread on what you can do and what people are doing for when the s@@t hits the fan. This doesn't have to be about "when the tyranical government comes to put us in FEMA camps'" I just think that with the way that the world is going it would be a good idea to have your stuff in order, so that you and your family won't be caught with your pants down. Not only for the obvious reasons but in case of natural disasters such as ice storms,micro-bursts or extended power outages.
So I guess I will start with what my family and I are doing to prepare.
Well, let's talk about everyones favorite topic: Guns and ammo! Having all the stockpiles of food and water will do you squat if you don't have anyway of protecting your stuff from looters and desperate people.
I am sure that there will a lot of debate over which firearm is better for what but I think that there are a couple of main concerns when getting a WTSHTF weapon.
1)availability of ammo-getting that new 22-243 is nice and all but when that and your reloads are gone what are you going to use? That's why I am going to be a proponent for the 5.56 round. Big brother carries it so (worse case scenario here) so if you really need ammo theres always that. Also, the 7.62 nato round. Both rounds are common use for military and law enforcement.
2)It has to be a round that your wife or child can handle in case you are incapacitated for any reason. Again, this bodes well for the 5.56. Little recoil.
Another viable option, if you can't afford an ar type weapon is a .22 rifle. Ammo is cheap and I dare to say that the .22lr is responsible for more dead deer than any round out there.
I think that a shotgun is a must have weapon. It's so versital and I don't think that I am overstating the fact that there is nothing more intimidating than the sound of a shotgun being loaded! A combination of birdshot, turkey loads and bucket shot should deter any would-be looter, at close range.
So with that being said here are the weapons that I currently have for if/WTSHTF.
For my main battle rifle I have an M4 style weapon with enough ammo and mags to keep me in buisness for awhile should I need to deploy it. I have started showing my wife how to shoot as well as my children. I also have spare parts for the rings, bolt carrier group etc. Just in case something breaks. As a more precision M4 is my coyote hunting AR which consistantly shoots 1/2 in or better. Both of these weapons use the same round so that I don't have to try and find two different types of ammo and can buy in bulk.
I think that it's important to note that this weapon could also be used to hunt game with when the need arises.
My main hunting/long range stand-off weapon is a remington 700 in .308. It has a 26in bull barrell and custom stock/scope on it. Believe me when I tell you that with this rifle, if I can see you, I can pretty much hit you with it. Availability of this ammo is great too.
For my shotgun, I have the standard remington 870 pump 12ga 3 1/2 in mag. Nuff said.
I also have other rifles such as the hi-point 9mm, russian m44, muzzleloader etc. There are a million configurations that you can make for your weapons but I think that it's best to keep it simple and not worry about the CDI (chicks dig it) factor. If you rely mainly on optics that require batteries make sure that you either stock up on a boatload or have back up iron sights. Make sure that you also have cleaning supplies and parts for each of your firearms. Gun won't due you any good if it's jammed up with goo. I also recommend getting a reloader and reloading dyes for each of your calibers plus all the brass, bullets, primers and powder that is legally aloud for you to have at one time.
Main thing is practice with your weapons that you have and become proficent with them! Practice battle drills, loading in the dark, loading with one arm, shooting offhand, basic battle drills like movement to contact, reacting to an ambush...gee the military was good for something for me!
This post was just on some of the weapons that I have in preparation for WTSHTF. On future posts I am hoping that other members will post stuff on food storage, water purification etc. I will try and post on a diff thing when I can but like I said, hopefully some members will hop on and help give this thread a life of it's own.
