WV Black Coyote 2/22/08

My brother-in-law killed a black coyote this morning. He spotted it behind his house while tending his sheep who are lambing right now. I have seen this coyote or at least a black one that I highly suspect is this one since my brother-in-law and sister just live about 400yds. on up the hollow from me.
We have been seeing this black one for about a 2 weeks pretty regularly while we are either tending the cattle or sheep. We have been watching for him ever since I saw him come off a dead calf. Not sure if he killed the calf or not but he was sure eating on it.
Anyway he slipped up today and my brother-in-law got him with his 6mm at about 250yds. right behind his house.

Its a male and we guessed maybe 35lbs.???

Ok it was killed about 5 miles give or take from Morgantown WV.

He said was he was going to skin it and get the hide tanned.

This is not the first black one we seen here over the last few years. We figure there will be more as my brother-in-law has seen him with another one we suspect is the female.

There was a white one and she mated with the first black one we ever saw here and she had 4 pups that were all regular brown/grey colored coyotes. The white one was not an albino. My buddy got a good look at less than 20yds. from his treestand while bowhunting but couldn't get a shot due to grapevines. He said her nose was black and she had a reddish tint down her back. We haven't seen the white one in over two years. Half the neighborhood saw the white one as it kinda stood out.
We hadn't seen any blacks either for a year or so till last summer while baling hay then every now and again till 2 weeks ago. Someone (me, brother-in-law, neighbors) have seen this black about every day or so.
I saw either him or another just at the break of day yesterday morning while checking the cattle but it was still not quite day and I couldn't tell you what color it was, but it was fast! LOL

I'll try to get out and make a few stands as soon as the cattle give me a break. I'm calving and my brother-in-laws calving and lambing right now and thats been keeping us alot busier than we'd like to be.
 
Man, all we have is boring color coyotes in Iowa. I shot one black grizzle color a couple of years ago and a blondish one last year, but the rest are plain-jane.

If you shoot another one like that one, I'll trade you the skinned hide for a custom built howler of your choice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Seriously, congratulations on the black dog. Look at the face, though, and tell me that thing is pure blood coyote. Even the 50 lb. coy dog I called a few years back had the coyote nose but this canine's is different. Coyotes don't have a bridge from their nose to their forehead. It is just a straight slope. That is what makes them so wild looking to us. Yet, your BIL's coyote/dog appears to have the stepped bridge of a domestic. Interesting. I have no doubt that it is coyote to some extent and was running wild with the pack of them but it would be educational to know what, if any, mix is in that critter.
 
sorry but imo, the whole coydog thing is way over done... the biology of the entire matter alone discount most of that... anyway.... great looking yote, and wish like most I could get me one nice one in black.... too bad this isn't like burger king "have it your way" or I would lready have one of those in the living room.
 
Looks like a black coyote to me. I have called in and killed coydogs, and they were obviously crossed. Every coyote's head does not look exactly like the other coyotes. Look at all the pictures posted, and you'll see a lot of variety, just like in dogs of the same breed. Congrats on a great story and a nice post. Great picture.
 
Nice yote! Look's like tho one i seen 4 weeks ago while on a stand. it was runin with 5 others of regular color. Havent seen them since. DARN YOTES!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
 
RW, Congrats to your brother in law. I've seen two on our hunting lease when driving in. The last one I saw had the white on its chest and a small white tip on the tail. Other than that it looked all coyote.
 
I wanted him bad but my brother-in-law got him first but thats ok with me too! He needed to go as he already had the taste of calf. Still not sure he killed it but he sure was eating it. Whats odd is my brother-in-law has never lost a lamb or any sheep yet to yotes. Well thats one that won't be getting the chance!

I wonder are the black color phases mostly an east of the Mississippi thing?

I understand your thoughts as I, too, was of the mind that the coydog issue was a non issue. That was until about 6 years ago I called on in and my partner shot it. I accused him of shooting the neighbor's dog as I watched it in the death spin. It was a medium haired dog body with a coyote head and tail weighing 50#. It was running with a full blooded coyote when killed. I don't have the picture on this computer or I would post it. Now I know they are out there.
If you want to see it just let me know. There have since been many more pictures of coydogs posted on this forum. Do a search and you will be amazed at the variety of them.

Wow! That is one beautiful coyote!
Looks like most other black coyotes I've seen pics of in the past. I don't doubt that many of them have some traces of dogs, whatever color they are. I know it has happened, the DNR has pics of verified coydogs. They claim that most of this type of activity happened when the coyote population was just getting started and mates were harder to find. Dog genes or not, they are still coyotes in my book.
