Saw alot last year, went for a scouting trip and didn't see any at all! Any of you Wyoming Guys have any info on populations and if they Winterkilled ?
Earlier this year I saw a bunch. I'm not sure if their more spread out right now since we got all this rain and there are more water sources available or if West Nile has impacted them. Im headed out tomorrow to help a friend gather his cows to vacinate and I should see a bunch. I will let you know tommorrow or Monday what I see.
I have been to Hanna and it sure looks like good grouse country. I did see some birds today so there are still a few around. They did seem scattered but it was also raining pretty hard and they weren't in much of a hurry to fly. So maybe I was just seeing a few and the others let me ride on by. I live in the Big Horn Basin in Northwest Wyoming.
population is doing good here I've been bow hunting deer and been seeing lots of young grouse this year every covey has lots of young more than years before.
young ones are the eatable ones i could get my limit every day with my bow just shooting young ones i don't shoot the bombers.
i haven't been seeing as many blues as normal they are the good tasting ones.
i don't have a bird license this year
last year we had a couple hunting nothing but grouse with dogsand notfinding any! we had some flying over camp at night >> we have seen more over other years.. they are not as many as a fe years a go bot they are around!! good luck!!
HEHE, I seen a bunch around Bags this year. They had a very good year for babies. Lots of little ones around. THey had a great amount of seed from native grasses and a ton of hoppers to eat this year. I am definitely seeing as many as any other year I have been around.
I took my dog out tonight and got my limit in CO. I found the birds are a lot harder to find with the eyes this year. The grass is still waiste high. This may make finding them by spotting alot more difficult. I think my dog put up about 60 birds tonight in about 2 hours. Again this was just north of Craig CO, but not far from Wyoming.
I have never really herd of them winter killing. I guess it could happen, but they are a little better prepared for winter/deep snow than larger animals. IT is simply a lot easier for them to getaround, and food needs are not nearly as great in total volume etc. Youm ight have seen a bunch over winter cause they are a lot easier to spot when they have to walk around on snow.
Actually, they do winterkill if the snow drifts too bad around the brush and they can't get under it for shelter, was told that by a Game Warden years ago.
WEll, hunted our butts off yesterday, didn't see a single Sage Hen, did call in a big male coyote though !, nephew got him, about 12 Prairie Dogs, and a rabbit, I think we saw everything but what we went hunting for !

Well I was up above Kemmerer last year this time on a antelope hunt and above Naughton dam they were everywhere in the feilds and out in the brush. Lots of private land up there, but also large pieces of blm. Hope this helps.
