Last week the wife of one of the ranchers that lets me hunt on their ranch asked me if I would take her daughter coyote calling. I said for sure I would. The daughter was home from college Christmas break for a few weeks. So we decided to go calling yesterday because they were branding some calves today.
On the first stand we just walked about 300 yards from their house to make a stand where I can remember having success with the rancher and his son 4 different times in the last 15 years or so.
We sat down next to 2 bushes that were about 3 feet high and set my Foxpro X-24 out about 15 yards from us. I started out playing Adult Rat Distress for about 4 to 5 minutes and then switched to Bay Bee Cottontail.
Just a few minutes later I caught some movement to our far left. The young lady was sitting to my left and she had not seen it yet. I told her to look to her left and she spotted it. It was about 70 yards away but all I could see was the coyote moving around slowly looking towards my X-24. Since the coyote was not committed to the X-24 I hit my #3 preset sound "Vole Squeaks" on volume 25.
Just about 5 to 10 seconds after Vole Squeaks started playing she said her it comes. I was looking just to the right of the young lady's ear when I saw the coyote step into a clearing through the bushes, it stopped about 35 yards away. I said shoot it. I got to see her raise her shotgun and point it at the coyote and I got to look right down the side of her barrel when she shot.
The 12 ga 2-3/4" 1-1/4 oz load of TSS #3 shot dropped the coyote but it was flopping around so I told her to shoot it again.

It was a great way to start out calling coyotes and it was only about 300 yards from her house. You can see the house in the upper left of the above picture.
We made 4 more stands with no luck. The wind was not blowing in the direction it normally blows in so we didn't call some of the places I wanted to. Then we went to a spot that I have never called anything in, but the wind was good so we sat down in some bushes with shotguns again.
At about 5 minutes of playing Snow Shoe Hi-Pitch we had a coyote charge right in to about 20 yards away. The young lady missed so I shot it, at about 30 yards away. About 15 to 30 seconds later we saw 3 coyotes trotting off about 300 yards away and they were glancing back towards us. So I hit my #2 pre-set sound "Pup Distress 3" on volume 35.
The front coyote stopped and looked back towards us and then started running straight towards us. The other two coyotes turned and followed the the front coyote. The young lady saw all this happen and I told her get ready here they come. It was probable only 20 seconds later that one of those coyotes popped out of the cover about 25 yards away. We both shot at it and it got away. This coyote came in farther to our right than I thought a coyote would. We did not set our chairs to the right nearly far enough, so it was very had to swing our shotguns to the right because are feet were pointing to far to the left.

It was a great day! The young lady killed a coyote on her first stand ever and got to see how changing sounds instantly with the pre-set buttons can bring in coyotes.
