I have a marlin long action rifle that i am looking into having re barreled. I really like this rifle. It has really nice wood and the action seems to be really tops! I may not even find anyone that will do the job, but if i do i need to decide as to what cal to go with. A good friend of mine and myself removed the barrel a couple nights ago to get a better look at the threads and recoil lug. It was a pretty easy job since he has the correct tools.
What i have in mind is a light varmint contour barrel chambered in a 6mm of some type. Just looking for some ideas, I just dont have any desire to keep it a 30-06 if i dont have to. thanks Lee

Skeets has done gots...

... "Da' fever!"

Next he'll tell the kids they have to sleep in the car, cuz he needs their room for loading and more gun safes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

(P.S... .270 is the best all around riffle there is)

I own a 270 and really like it, but if I was starting over with the choice of custom chamberings. I think the 280 Ackley would get the nod.

6mm Remington would be the closest fit in a .243 cal.

Lee, if you are looking at other than 6mm/243 then I recommend the 25-06 also. If you want to stay with the 6mm round then the 6mm-06 or 6mm Rem. will fit your action and bolt with the least amount of work.

Hard to beat that twennyfive-ought, Skeet. Ground squirrel (a bit much) to elk (a bit light) it should work for everything except the big bears. It is my largest caliber centerfire rifle anymore.

Two good calibers that have already been mentioned are the 25-06 and the 6mm06. Both are great cartridges. You mentioned something in the 6mm class for a long action, so the 6mm06 seems to be a good choice for your initial criteria, especially if you are looking for lighter game such as groundhogs and varmints. If you are leaning more toward a deer / antelope cartridge, I would choose the 25-06.

The 6mm06 is my "go to" groundhog rifle and the 25-06 has accounted for five Wyoming antelope.

6mm/06 is a dandy. I like the 6mm Ackley Imp a bit better, and a 257 Roberts Ackley Imp a bit better yet.

My grandad and uncle took elk, moose and large bear with his Roberts, along with plenty of deer. Granddad had a 2 1/2 power Lyman scope on it. My uncle had a 250 Savage with Lyman peep sights mounted. I still have a partial box of Peters 100 grain slugs for the 250 Savage that he used for Bambi up to Aw S#IT! animals. He put the shots where they needed to be, and a day or two later he would come out of the woods with their kills. A few wolfs met their end with the gun as well.
