This rifle will be for long range coyote hunting, and basic target popin. Lee

Lee,

I have a 25-06 Rem, and a 6mm Rem, chambered rifle, and for
the purposes you have listed, I would go with the 6mm Rem.
I love the 25-06, so this is hard for me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif But the
6mm Rem. is one of those fabled "inherently accurate"
type cartridges that seem to easily find accurate loads,
with a wide variety of bullets. And when you find one it
really likes, it gets impressive. It is easier to shoot
all day, off a target bench, or at colony varmints. And
for long range coyote shooting, there are a number of
high B.C. bullets available in 6mm. You will probably
want to opt for a 1:9 twist barrel, if you want to shoot
the heavier VLD bullets, and you might consider an AI
chamber, if you want to flatten out the trajectory of the
heavier bullets. My standard 6mm chamber, in a 1:10
twist barrel is has accurate loads from 65 gr. VMax bullets,
up to several 100 gr. boat tail hunting bullets. I get some
pretty impressive velocities(+3700 fps) out of the 65 gr.
VMax bullets, and I have shot a number of groups in the
.2 MOA range, and the occasional .1 MOA range, with these bullets.

So over my passion for the 25-06 Rem. I have to recommend
the 6mm Rem. for your expressed purposes.

In a 6mm the 6mm Rem would be a good choice, I have an old Remington 722 in 244 with a 1 in 12 twist that is scary accurate with 70 and 75 grain bullets I haven't tried heavy bullets in it because I am a light bullet guy. One other cartridge you might consider would be the 240 Weatherby, I think it would fit that bolt face, I have not worked with it but it seems interesting.

Skeets...

What he said.

You have gotten a lot of recommendations here - up to Ephalant cartridges (??), but if you want a long range coyote cartridge, there is none better than the 6mm Rem in standard or Ackley version.

The 6mm Rem thrives on a long action - mine are loaded to a COL of 3.15", which won't fit a short action magazine (@2.80").

It is not "fur friendly", but somehow, I don't see you skinnin' yotes in the garage while the misses is yelling about the kidlets /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

.

I am also looking for something moderate that fills the gap between my 204 and 7STW. I'm looking at the wildcat 6/284 or 6.5x47L.

Skeet, weren't you going with the .243AI?? Man do you drive your wife nutz because you can never make a decision?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

His poor family... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif can you imagine how dinner time must go??
Lee's wife: "Lee, what do you want for dinner?"

Lee: "Dinner? hmm, well I've heard good things about chicken strips, but I've really wanted ribs the last few days... Maybe we could go to Wendy's or something..."
Lee's wife: "Well I was going to cook some dutch oven potatoes and BBQ chicken."
Lee: "...dutch oven potatoes??... The neighbors had that last night and it smelled really good... But I'm thinking we should have lobster, or fish.... or maybe some lamb chops...
Lee's wife: "Can't you just make up your mind?"
(3 hours later)
Lee: "...so many choices... Maybe I should poll the guys on PM??..."
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

hope this doesn't upset you lee, just having a little fun. I have a hard time making some decisions sometimes. The worst is when I get a gift card or something. I'll spend 2-3 hours trying to figure out how to spend $50... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The truth is I have a ton of fun doing what i do and looking at all the options. I love life every minute of the day. I also have a wonderful wife and family. I love them every minute of the day. My life is dammmmmmmmmm good!!!! Sounds like some of you guys need a little of what i have! I have a true passion for this sport and if there were not people like me we might loose our right to enjoy this sport, so stick it if you dont like how i think! I'm just having a good old time spending money and i do have some to spend ya hooooo!! Lee

Yeah... well, I get a kick out of Skeets.

He makes me laugh about eleventeen times a day.

Plus, he sure got a tailwhoopin' when he first came here, and he didn't tuck and run like a chicken - he just kept keeping on doing what he does best, which is makin' the rest of us giggle.

I'll by that little rascal a beer anytime!!

Skeets... build a 6mm Rem AI and don't look back!

I wasn't trying to ruff any feathers. Like Catshooter, I think you are funny. You just can't seem to make up your mind can you? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A new F-Class 1000yrd record was recently set with a 284Win.

That's a long action.

"Lucidity" That's a big word, I better go look that one up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You are entertaining Skeets. Kinda remind me of a Pin-Ball machine.

I mean that in a good way of course. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey Repete - Lucidity = What you ain't after you finish your rack of Keystone Light for the day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Of course up in N. Idaho I think they must use the empty 'stone cans for setting GPS coordinates from the looks of it.

Man that's funny /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I laughed till I darn near peed. (Can I say peed on here?)

You know I won't touch that Keystone with the twenty foot pole I touch my ten foot pole with. YUCK /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You are right about the farmers and loggers marking their back-trails with the Keystone "Lite's" though.
Problem is that unlike bread crumbs, nothing comes along and eats them.

Sorry Skeet, didn't mean to hi-jack your thread.

I still recomend the 284Win. or the BlackHawk in 45/70 necked down to 22cal or the 243/700nitro or the,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
