Interested in your pet load for a .44 Mag Revolver. Cast or Jacketed. Weight of bullet. Powder choice. And what you use it for ? Thanks in advance. Understood: A handload needs to be eased into.
24.0 grains H-110 with 240 grain XTP. This is all the recoil that I want. I practiced alot this summer with a 240 grain cast bullet and trail boss powder.
I have a Model 29 with a 8 3/8 barrel that I got back in 1974. I shoot a 200 grain lead bullet using 17 or 18 grains of 2400. Reloaded thousands of rounds for my 44.
Untold thousands of rounds through my 3 screw Super Blackhawk using 23 grains of 2400 and the 240 grain Sierra JHC. About 15 years ago I had Ruger replace the wore out barrel with a new one and seldom load it heavy anymore. I like 14 grains of Bluedot or 9 grains of Universal with a 240 or 250 grain cast bullet. I dont cast anymore but I used to use Lyman 429383 and 429421 bullets for most of my casting before changing to a 180 grain Saeco truncated cone for plinking.
My .44 mags dont see much action anymore, but when I take them out I reach for a medium velocity load most times. Hot loads wear me out too quick nowadays.
About 20.5 - 21.0 grs. of #2400 under a 240 gr. jacketed bullet or 250 gr. hardcast coupled with a standard large pistol primer has been working on all sorts of critters by a lot of handgunners for a very long time.
Gentle men. Thank you one and all for your replies. I have selected Hodgdon H110 and the Hornady 240 Grn. HP/XTP. Remington Brass. As I work this up I will post a report of how I like it. Again, thank you all.
Fired from a 4 5/8" Super Blackhawk, all are very accurate, I shoot more of the Bullseye loads than anything because they are about like a 38 in recoil from the heavier 44's. I hunt with the Unique load more than anything as it will handle anything around here and the H110 load I carry when hog hunting for no other reason that it shoots excellent.
21 H110 with custom LBT WLFN 320 grain cast with WW. Bullet is fitted to seat with flat nost just inside the cylinder. Have gone higher than 21 but ended up backing off a bit. This load hits just under 1300 fps in a 7.5 inch Super Blackhawk.
