Youth .22 - which one?

I am going to buy my 6yr old a .22. He has been shooting/learning on a little bb gun and doing pretty well.

He is small, so size is an issue. I have seen the Cricket, Henry and the CZ. I like the CZ but its the larger rifle of the group.

Any suggestions or other rifles to look at?

Thanks!

I forget which one it was but, one of the outdoor magazines recently tested various youth .22's, and the CZ came out waaaaaay on top of the list. They were rated on acuracy, trigger pull, comfort and I think resale value. THey said that if it were up to them, CZ is the only way yo go in a youth gun. Now if I remember correctly, CZ is a big advertizer with them also. There is a periodical called
"Gun Tests" that you can subscribe to, that sells no advertizing space and buys outright, what ever it is they are going to test. It is published by, AG Media, PO Box 5656, Noewalk Ct. 06856-5656. In the issue I am looking at as I write this, they are testing and reporting on six types of hand guns, three types of rifles, two types of ammo, over and under shot guns, and cross draw holsters. If they don't like it, they flat out tell you "don't buy it" and tell you why. I don't remember what the subscription price was, but if you write to them, I'm sure they will tell you. In my opinion, it is well worth the money. Good luck.

My father bought a Crickett for my 5yr old nephew. He loves his gun and it easy to teach him proper shooting saftey with this gun. It is also a very easy gun for him to shoot. At ten yards he can consistently hit a pop bottle cap. At twenty he can get a group within three inches. This is all done from a standing position. He doses have a little trouble loading the gun but I think that this is more from the small size of the bullet though.

Looks like the chipmunk comes in 22lr, 22mag and 17HMR. The 17 would be more expensive to shoot, but it would be ok for some close prairie dog shooting.

When my granddaughter was born I bought her a Marlin 15YS. Since she is now just 19 month old she has been pretty busy and not had time to do much shooting. I put a 4 power scope on it and it shot good enough for me to buy another for the first grandchild for my other daughter. It would be a good idea to have a gunsmith work on the trigger pull. That really helped the ones I have. I will probably pick up another stock and shorten it more so that she will be able to get started in a couple of years.

We went out this morning and ended up with the CZ .22 Scout. It's a little heavier and bigger then the chipmunk and cricket, but its a nicer setup for him to grow into.

Thanks for the suggestions.
