Youth shotgun

While the 870's are probably a better gun, IMO they're only better if you like the feel of them. I've never liked any Remington shotgun I've ever picked up, just don't care for the feel of them. Can't shoot my dad's 870 worth a darn. Fit and feel is the ticket. That's why I 'm hopefully getting a new A5 over the 2 benelli's I've tried. Totally agree with the semi statement. Started the kid I take hunting out on the bantam 500 I have, had a full choke in it and when he shot at his first squirrel it knocked him off the log we were on. Didn't affect his shooting any, thankfully.
 
I bought a 20ga. Mossberg 500 Youth for my grandson several years ago and he's since grown to over 6' and still likes to shoot it even though I offered to trade it in on a full size 12ga and he won't let go of it...He's gotten pretty good with it shooting clays and has been able to get several 'doubles' in a row...It functions flawlessly and patterns good with a variety of shot...

I've thought of getting another one for my wife for around the house...She likes them more than a handgun...
 
Only problem I ever had with mine is when I didn't clean for like 8 years and 3 inch hulls started sticking in the chamber. tore it down, scrubbed it good, no problems since.
 
Picked up an 870 Express youth model in 20 gauge, a few years back, less than a box of shells through it. Guy bought it for his wife, she decided she didn't like hunting. They had new born, needed a little cash, so he put it up for sale.

Absolutely love it! Weighs nothing; it's like carrying a BB gun in the field. Short and sweet, making it really handy as a truck gun. Patterns well for pheasant, partridge, grouse... I don't duck hunt, so I haven't tried it there. First round I fired at a live target, I dropped a rooster at 25 yards. It's scored several since!!

Would I recommend it for an 11 year old? Most definitely! Good entry level gun, if she takes care of it, it'll last a long time. If she doesn't, or if she should decide hunting isn't her cup of tea, well... You ain't out a whole lot! And, you'll have a great gun to beat around in the truck.

My 870 Express youth model in 12 gauge convinced me to buy the 20 gauge.
 
++++ for the 870! Had mine since I turned 12 and never had any issues. Now the gun my wife shoots. Tons of aftermarket options for it as well.
