I mentored the youth turkey hunt for my gun club last weekend. Lousy conditions, but we got our kid a bird. Pouring rain until 10am, and when it finally quit we had a small group come in. Just a Jake, but the kid was happy to just get his first turkey.
I thought I could sleep in on Sunday, but a young guy walked up to me at the club after pictures and whatnot, and asked me if I remembered helping him get his first turkey 10 years ago? After I realized who he was I told him yes, and that I remembered it well. He was the first kid I ever mentored. He then asked me if I could mentor with him on Sunday because a couple guys couldn't make it the second day, and their kid didn't get a bird on Saturday. I couldn't say no. We met up and conditions were worse on Sunday! Spitting snow at daybreak, then rain and 45 mph wind gusts. We managed to put 2 longbeards in front of the kid, but he got busted moving and the birds hightailed it.
I’ll tell ya, I was happy to do the 2nd day, but keeping up with a 24 year old, and a 15 year old chasing after birds in hill country wore my butt out! Lol…
It was really cool to see that situation come full circle, and the kid I helped 10 years ago stuck with it, and is now willing to help other kids get started. That’s exactly why I do it each spring!
