Do any of you hunt solo at night?

I was walking in the dark, no light at all at tree line headed to the top of a bald mountain. Crossing a flat area I heard what sounded like thunder, realized it was hooves. Dozens of antelope ran by me,close front and back of me. Some so close I thought I could reach out and touch. Came and went in just seconds but I wondered what it would of felt like if ran into, seemed like they were running 30+ mph.

I probably hunt alone 75 percent of the time and with a partner 25 percent of the time. I'm in my mid 30's so most of my buddies my age have wives and children that are a bigger priority. I enjoy hunting with a partner more, easier to scan all directions and I enjoy the comraderie that comes with it. I normally tend to hunt with guys that are older; they have more free time and some are retired. I have definitely picked up a trick or two from the older guys and they're more easy going; less ego involved.

I found a friend to night hunt with. We setup on opposite sides of the truck looking 180 degrees from each other. That way, we cover everything. I like this much better than solo.

Most of the time, we set the caller 25 yards up wind calling into the wind. About 50% of the time, the coyote comes from down wind. It seems to work well.

I’m usually out alone 99% of the time. I like the peace and simplicity it provides, and I feel like I’m more focused because it’s all on me.

A buddy just picked up a thermal this year, so I’m hoping to get him on some coyotes.

Not a lot of big critters around here in WI, so not much to worry about.

A little off topic but wonder if yal have a slick way to keep your wives (or other; ain't my business) from stressing. My wife sill likes me and I don't wanna be an indifferent prick to anyone who wants good things for me..

Give em hell yal.

SwiftyP - sometimes that is a problem. Carry a phone or talkie, set an approx. time to be back. I'm old and had that problem for about a year. Finally convinced her if a problem happens, we're far out in the country and I'll probably not survive, get used to it. Could be a heart attack while watching the tube, no different. For minor injury, call and get her to come get me. Yes I've tripped but could get back up. I'm back before midnite and say hi to anyone else up before I hit the rack. She doesn't worry much anymore.

Fellas, I've had a few trips around the sun (85) and still hunt solo. Standard procedure for my bride of 62 yrs is "I'm going to..some named area.. and plan to be back by...some time... Now she doesn't know where any of my hunts are but, my friend who works day labor for the ranchers does. He is not a hunter but definitely a good friend! I always leave her with a kiss and she always says Be careful. It works.:giggle:

If you have decent cell service, share your location with her and a trusted friend for when she is not around---made my wife of 52y sleep easier along with telling her the general area of the couple Counties a may be hunting. As far as quitting time, she knows that it can be anytime from a few hours to daylight.

Find My and/or Life 360. Got this installed or added when I started traveling out of state to hunt. Works great for local night hunts as well. I tell her if I haven’t moved in a few hours to call me and if I don’t answer to send the boys. My wife is so used to me going out, even in the middle of the night from getting cell cam pics, all she asks if she wakes up is hogs, coyotes or trespassers? Although it’s a little different down here, not a lot of “predators” to worry about except snakes maybe.

Thanks, I was not aware of apps like that. Once again I have learned from this forum(y)

Life 360 is free and shows me anywhere I am providing I have my phone with me even when I’m out of cell coverage.

Find My is on all iPhones and you can add different people or allow different people to see you. You can find “air tags” with it. I have one on my key ring so if I lose my keys, I can find them. I added my sons and brother (lives in Washington) to my Find My so they could also keep track of me when hunting. What’s funny is my brother text one day when I was right near the Washington/Idaho line and asked which state I was hunting cause I’d been in Washington and now I’m “real close” to the border? I told him I had a tag for both States and if that bird didn’t cross the State line I was crossing over to get him!!

Around here we use those apps to spy on each other to find where the other guy is fishing!
There was a father and son where I worked, father comes in with a big cooler of crappie tells me he caught them at x location,20 minutes later the son shows me where he Really was. The next Saturday you should have seen his face when I come rolling up in my boat 5 miles from where he told me the fish where at lol. Priceless.
Moral of the story: be careful who you share your location with lol.
