1000yrd. gun?????????????????

22 cal. Contender, of course!...Well sort of, at least. Ray Prager out of Denver killed 2 PD's at 1040 with a suped-up Contender in 5.6x50R/75 A-Max/8-32x Burris BD mil-dot. I spotted those shots and it was about 6 or 7 till he killed the 1st one and then 4 or 5 more till the second connected. Nothing quite like watching the vapor trail go into those dogs i can tell ya'.

The next day it was 2 with 1 shot @ 1140 after about 30 shots or so. Then he cleaned his gun and it was just 7 more till he got the double. I'll never forget it.

Many better choices than the 308 for 1000yd shooting. I'd go with a 260AI, 6.5x47, 6.5x284, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6XC, or some kind of 7mm geared toward the 162gr A-max....

My local varmints are woodchucks.
You'd need some serious glass & pristine conditions just to see a small target like a 'chuck at 1000yds. Was shooting that far a week ago and the mirage was pretty heavy, making my steel plate look like it was swimming. If a woodchuck walked out under my target, I doubt I'd even have seen it.

I did see this one later in the day though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A plain ol' .243 with a fast twist barrel slinging 115DTACs will get to 1,000 just as easily as Godzilla does...

it looks like that guy was hungry /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I recently saw some youtube videos of our finest young men in the military. Snipers using thier 50cal sniper rifles taking out potential suicide bombers at well over 1000 yards. I'm all for those bastards commiting suicide, but our boys didn't give them a chance! It's really cool how they blow up when hit.

That reloading book is in my shop right now. I will check tomorrow but it is a hot load, about 65,000 psi. I have shot hotter but you have to remember that every chamber is different. A 28" barrel helps the velocity also.

Its all about the toys......last I talked to Ray he was trying to convince me to put together a fast twist 22-204 AI Contender for those distant pds.

Ray has since, gotten a 204 lol.

I told him I had two of them and how much I like them so I should get credit for a barrel sale from somebody. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Another long range performer is a .204 in a fast twist and Berger 50 gr. pills. My good friend from Louisiana showed me what that can do way out there.

Hey SK--i've got a fast-twist XP in 20 BR--just need to get out and shoot it some. It's my next walking coyote rig.

Been sitting here thinking about the question; I don't have a great rifle for 1000 yard shooting, and have never shot that distance. But, if I were to get into 1000 yard shooting, I'd have to go with the 6.5x284 or a 280 AI. Bullet availability is there. However, I do have a 7mm Mag that would be a good candidate as it is accurate with several different bullets. I might be able to develop it into a good long ranger.
Before doing anything, I'd check in with the guys who shoot 1000 yard benchrest to see what is winning matches in that game.
I know my oldest son does a good job shooting long distance with one of his AR-15's and heavy bullets.

Martyn,
Pick you up a box of 162 AMAX bullets for your 7mag and push them with H4831SC or RL-22. They are cheap and fly well...

May not be competitive in benchrest, but you'll be at 1,000yds with a couple hundred left in the tank!

f.w.i.w...
A fast twist 243 or 243AI pushing heavies will do 1,000 while burning 1/3 less powder than any 7mm...

You have to be more specific than just "7 Mag"... is it 7mm Rem Mag or 7mm Wby Mag or 7mm Rem SAUM or 7mm Rem Ultra Mag or 7mm Winchester Short Mag etc ???

What ever rifle and caliber you choose, don't hunt at that distance until you have several hundred or even thousand rounds down range.

My recommendation would be a Remington M700P (former PSS) in a 308.

Cheaper ammo
Better ammo availability
Less recoil than any "magnum"

As far as ballistics go.....no matter what anyone recommends there is always something ballistically superior.

Mines a Savage short action single shot. It boils down to OAL if your going to use a SA or LA with them lonnnnnggg bullets they use for the better B.C.

I will be taking both my 6.5x55's out with me every time I take my new Savage 6.5x284 and shoot the same distances. The 6.5x55 is suppose to reach out that far also with respectable accuracy also.

Thank you. I'll have to get some of the AMAX bullets you suggest. And, H-4831SC is THE best powder in my rifle.
