12ga. Choke and Loads for Predators

HeviShot gets my vote. After seeing what it does to snow geese and Canada geese at absurd distances, I wouldn't use anything else. BTW, this stuff patterns really tight, at least in #4 (not 4 buck). You might want to try it out on paper with your regular chokes before spending money on another tube. My experience with #4's out of a modified tube in my Franchi is a pattern of about 26" at 40 yards. The damn pellets are about as hard and heavy as depleted uranium, (read Penetration) and twice as ugly. If you cut one open, you'll see some ugly, mishapen shot with an average size of what's printed on the shell. Some bigger, some smaller, ovals, flattened shot, butt ugly. But VERY deadly, with no serious flyers.

I don't know why this ugly stuff works, I just know it does. I don't mind the $1.40-1.60 per round price, because I won't need a second or third shot.

I shoot a Moss.500,Kicks Buckkicker tube and Fed.2/34 Prem. #4 buck.I use a 2.5x20 scope mounted on shoot through rings and a fiber optic bead. Both scope and bead are zeroed at 40 yards.
I spent the summer testing all brands of ammo in both 2/34 and 3 inch and found that the 2/34 Federals patterned better at the 40 yard mark, than anything else.I'm sure my gun will shoot the 3 inch shells as well or better than 2/34 but I don't.
I hold off on those long range shots. My gun and ammo combo will kill 100% of the time at 40 yards if I do my part.If you can call them into 50 yards give them a kiss, they'll come the extra 10.
My 2 cents.

Scott

Thought some might be interested in this little blurb I got in the latest Hevi-Shot email newsletter.

I'm hoping that everyone on this board who uses a shotgun will email Hevi-Shot and express interest in this load.

"Our latest and greatest product is called “Dead Coyote”. It is a HEVI•SHOT® cartridge with shot size “T”, loaded at 1.5-oz. with enough speed to reach out and touch about any varmint or small animal you would like at effective ranges that exceed those available in conventional ammunition. And the pellets are pretty round (for us!)".

Thanks,

They have been working on this T-shot along with #4 buck as T is the biggest that can be used in Arkansas. #4 should be really good when they get it done.

I have used 3" #4 buck and federal premium 3" 2oz lead 2s for fox and coyote out of my Rem 870 express with good results. I also happened across a couple of boxes of older 3" lead BBs. The Lead BBs are great but my supply has dwindled to just a few lone survivors. I just came across a Remington 870 express super mag and some 3.5" hevishot 2s. I'm going to head to the range this week and see what they can do.

I have a Remington 870 3" that I have shot great patterns with using a Rem. choke extra full and 3" #4s with for turkey.

I just bought a H.S. Strut Undertaker Plus that has three different height adjustable sight rings that you can add to the end, with a fiber optic sight on the ring. It is intended for Lead shot only. I understand I can't shoot steel through it, but what about Hevi shot?

Anyone have any experience or comments, good or bad, about this particular choke tube?

I thought I had tried them all but don't have that one. The only thing you have to watch is not to get too tight of a choke with steel or iron. It will not constrict down and can damage a barrel. Call HS and just ask them about iron shot.

Thanks Steve I guess I will call H.S. and find out. I don't know what the constriction is on this thing but it is tighter than a rem choke x full extended. Guess I'll just shoot #4 buck untill I find out.

Anyone know how to get the bead off an 870 with vent rib? I thought it just screwed off but it ain't looking like it now! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

For what its worth I will have Hevi Shot #2 with me at the PM hunt in Arizona. I will have a few rounds to anyone who will be hunting with the shotgun only. I have been shooting Hevi way before it was available due to my shooting contacts from waterfowl hunting. This stuff is for real. The yardages that varmithunter posted is for real and I am not suprised that someone has not posted a 100+yard shot on a elk with the stuff[just kidding].
I will be hunting with a m1 super 90 loaded with #2hevi and a 17 rem at the arizona hunt.

I did a search for steel shot loads and then ended up reading this thread. Every word of it! Great info thanks guys. A friend of mine gave me permission to crow hunt his field but asked if I could use steel shot so I guess I'm buying steel shot. Thanks to you guys i've just been educated on chokes and loads and also HEVI shot. Ordering out of Cabela's hevi shot, wads, and some new hulls would cost $110. I'm gonna go for it.
Getting back to steel shot. My 11-87 SP has what looks like a standard mod choke in it, I bought it used 6 mo. ago. Do you guys think there would be any pattern benifits using steel and heavy shot out of this shotgun or should I order a new choke too.
