This rifle is glass bedded with a trigger job..
Brad just imagine how your's is gonna shoot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Take a look at those groups that Blake posted if you want to see what kind of accuracy a .17 is capable of. Those are some impressive groups! This one isn't in the same league, but it's not "too" shabby, considering it's my main squeeze, every stand hunting rifle, and that this group isn't a fluke. A 7 shot group (flier was first shot out of a cold, clean barrel):

Well,

I usually have 3 or 4 but right at the moment, I only have this ugly Mod 7 with Pulled sporter rem barrel cut to 18 inches and hand lapped at McMillan gun works here in Phoenix.

It will shoot

Hey DAA, how much difference is there in the .17 Predator and the .17-.223?

Roughly 150-200 fps or so with 30 gr. bullets.

Question for you .17 guys that have built them using aftermarket barrel's....is there a preferred maker for the .17 barrels? Cut rifled, button rifled....any preference's either way?

Thanks, Brad.

Brad,,,,,,,,I have two Pac-Nor barrels and a third on the way. Mine have been great so far and I'll keep using them for any 17cal builds I do.
Lots of good barrels out there but not all of them can get that tiny little hole right. Pac-Nor seems to have gotten it right. A few others have too, but I try to have some customer loyalty when I find a good product along with good service.
3Grove clean up easy, and 9twist will handle the 30gr pills. That's what mine are.
You may want to rethink your idea of a 22" barrel for the 17Rem or 17Pred. IMO,,, speed is what makes the 17's work so a 24" might be a little faster yet still be handy for calling.
My 17FB is 22", but it was built with a different purpose and bullet weight in mind.

As far as renting you a 17 for a season,,, I can't help ya there. I'm actually using my old Sako Vixon in 222 for Coyotes this year because being the dim-bulb that I am, I waited untill Fall to revamp the LVSF.
Maybe Dave could send ya his BDL. He ain't using it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I would have gone with the 17Pred if our terraine was a little more open and I wasn't already set up with about a thousand pieces of 17Rem brass and bullets. Around here shots are seldom over 100 so the 17Rem and 25gr pills work great. If I still lived in No. Nevada I would have deffinatly built a 17Pred and shot the heavier 30 grainers. My take on the pred is that you can shoot 30's as fast or faster than 25's out of a 17Rem with everything else being equal. I may be way off and DAA can tell ya for sure. He's obviously done alot of hard work getting a handle on the 17Pred.

You know you want one. Sell them old Gaucamole azzed cows and order up a 17 cal barrel. Then let the rest of us know when ya get it and we'll be happy to help ya spend your money on reamers and dies and bullets,,,,oh yea,,,and new cleaning rods and funnels and case trimmers etc. cause none of your old stuff is giong to fit in those those tiny holes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Come on,,,Pull the trigger. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I need a good place to set back my barrel and rechamber and possibly cut an recrown, any suggestions? Dont want to brake the bank either since it is going to be a sticking with the factory barrel also.

Maybe a 17-204, kevin weaver made me one, 26" heavy stainless krieger barrel. Easy to make cases, as I only needed to neck size from 20 down to 17. This was done with a reading neck bushing die and 4 bushings. The necks did not need turned ,but I turned just enough to true.I used mostly nosler brass.I anealed when done sizing necks. The good thing is you don't waste barrel life or components fireforming. I have not got the velocity in my gun that others are getting, about 4070fps with 30 grn bullets.I have tried 6 or 7 powders.Accuracy is good with one 5 shot group in an inch and a half at 300yds 4of the 5 were at 6 tenths of an inch. Others have reported of getting up to 4300 fps with the 17-204 but so far I can not get a safe load above 4070fps. This case I believe has more case capicity than a 17 predator so I would guess that my lower than normal velocity for this wildcat is not the norm. This is a 700 action and the factory varmit stock that was bedded and reinforced with two quarter inch rods and epoxy.Action bedded barrel floated. Burris 4.5 to 14 scope. Love the gun.

Is it a 17 Remington ? I T & D in Ohio does a pretty decent job at a very reasonable price .

Fred, I wonder if the .17 Predator would work in one of those black guns that Mike is so good at.Hmmmm.

Well Dave, it's certainly a comfort to know that I'm not the only one thinking of such a whimsical idea... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Being a guinea pig for the 7WSSM may have to take a back seat here...

Brad,
Been kicking around that 223AI build a little too long before this 17 bug bit right into a major artery. The ballistics with those 30gr GOLDS just can't be touched inside of 500yds...
Got bit so hard that my little 7 in .223 is in a brown box to Colorado for "Predatorization" by THE man. Just be sure to have your PAC-NOR finished @ 24" minimum when you have yours built! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I'm copying DAA and going 9 twist Lilja @ 24", but #3 contour to fit the AWR handle...

Sweet! Another .17P on a M7. That's awesome. Greg sure does some nice work too!

About the .17P in AR's... I really have no idea. I would tend to think it would be less than ideal, being a fairly straight sided case. But, then again, it was specifically designed with more taper than an AI, expressly for the purpose of accomodating feeding. I actually sent a guy some dummy rounds awhile back so he could send them to Dtech to find out if it would work well or not, but I never heard anything back from him.

Dave who else has a reamer for the 17 predator besides Tannel. Would it be possable to run a mach 4 reamer in deeper. I know several people that have mach 4 reamers.

I don't know for sure who all besides Greg has the reamers. I'm pretty sure Kevin Weaver does though.

Running a Mach IV in deep would be "close", but not the same. Have not really looked too close, but I think it would probably work just fine. I use a Mach IV die backed out of the press for neck sizing.

here are a couple of mine

1st one is a cz 527 varmint in the 17 rem with a 4x12 loopie on it
cz17rem.jpg

2nd one is a noveske built upper with a dpms lower 17 rem with a pentax 3.5x10 on it

ar17rem.jpg

The cz really likes the 20 grain vmaxs as well as the 25 hp and the noveske is shooting the 25 grain vmaxs and 25 hps very well i was looking yesterday into buying some of the kindler bullets where are you all getting them at im hearing good stuff about them Ron

I have been shooting a 17-222 for about a year now. It is amazing to see how much damage those little 20gr v-maxes do to a PD. I have shot many PD's out to about 300 yds with good results. On a recent outing, a big PD that I shot looked to be sleeping on his back on the mound. No obvious entrance hole and no exit. Just allot of "sloshing" insides! Have taken coyotes with 25gr bergers...One shot kills, shot at between 125 - 150 yds max. It would shoot farther. I think, but never had a need to. I am now hooked on the sub-caliber stuff for good!
