Anybody shooting the 17 WSM?

What's your thoughts about it? Type gun, ammo, accuracy, function, range, performance, and anything else you can think of.

I'm wanting to fill a gap between my 17HMR & my 222 with a new gun. I've been looking at this cartridge but it seems the only two gun options that I might be happy with is the laminated fluted HB Savage or I found a few new Ruger 77/17 stainless HB's in that caliber.

What do you guys have to say?

Franklin Armory makes one in and AR platform. That would be fun to shoot. I've not owned one, but shot one.

Have spent a good amount of time with the Savage and would steer clear of it. It's accurate, but the extractor on mine came out ever 10 or so shots. Magazine didn't feed well, and was just very unimpressed with the quality of the BMag.

Like I said in your other post, if you want either the 17 WSM or 17 Hornet, for me and I have both, it comes down to what type of shooting I'm doing that day. If I know I'll be going through a few hundred rounds a day shooting sage rate, gophers, ground squirrels, PD's, etc. etc. and I don't want to worry about saving brass, I grab my Sav HB SS Bmag, which shoots very well, and I get to blazing away at them. If I want something that delivers a little more "pop" for longer shots or maybe a little larger critters and I know I won't be going through hundreds of rounds per day, I grab my 527 in 17 Hornet.

I certainly wouldn't put my Bmag in the same class as my CZ 527 17hornet with regard to quality but the newer Bmags with the heavy barrel and laminated stocks tend to shoot pretty darn well now so I wouldn't be to concerned about getting one of those. Eric Mayer, a reputable member on this site, has one of about every rifle ever chambered in 17 WSM and last time I looked at one of his reviews, his HB SS Bmag out shot all the others by quite a bit.

Like I said, if your shooting in bulk and don't want to pick up brass, get the 17 WSM but if you are ok picking up your brass or are ok with spending double for ammo to be able to reach out further with even more authority, get the 17 Hornet.

Better yet, just go ahead and get both!!

I believe the Ruger 77/17 WSM was discontinued but they are bringing it back. At least that's what a local firearm dealer told me. Anyone have any info on this?

I shot a Franklin Armory upper quite a bit for about a week while I was tuning it to run well for a buddy who was ready to give up on it. It was acceptable accuracy wise with the one type of round I had. It was severely overgassed and being a piston set up the only remedy was adding weight to the buffer. I did get it running like a top and I will say it was a quality build but should be for that money.

All in all for my needs I'll keep the HMR and ammo under $10 a box. I have an A17 and it's a killer but always wanted the upper AA makes.

Savage b-mag, I can describe it in a few words. Inaccurate piece of junk. I know because I was dumb enough to try two.

Yes, I saw this. Thanks. I went to order one the other day from my local gun shop and they told me they are not available right now from Ruger. I don't understand why being that they have them up on their site. The guy at the gun shop told me to check back in a month.

On GB, Wholesale Hunter shows 10 77/17 WSM's in stock for $784 + shipping.
Also The Gun Dock shows having 8 in stock for $767 + shipping.

Is that a decent price?

How do the 77/17 WSM's shoot accuracy wise?

My Dad has one and it shoots great but the trigger isn't worth a crap but a TIMNEY solved that problem.

To spend that kind of money on a 17 rimfire you must want one really bad.......or have deep pockets with nothing better to spend it on. JMO

Yep. Opinions are like A-holes and everyone's got one and they all stink except for yours. Is that what you were referring to?
