1st Annual Whistlepig Shoot

bluebunny,

We have several names for them here. whistlepigs, picketpins, gophers, sage rats, diggers, and a few that I can't remember. I think it is a personal preferance thing, I can talk to 20 people and each will call them something different.

I personally just say I am going squirrel shooting, or squirrely shooting, going out to the squirrel hills, or I am going to go shoot rats, or gophers, or diggers, because the country side is so full of holes, it looks like a moon scape.

Thank You for your 2cents

Verminator2,

That would be awesome if you both can make it out. There is a lot of places to shoot rats over here. There is BLM Land from Sandhollow to the Nevada Border.

But South of Boise is your best bet. Get one of those DeLorme Idaho Map Books, it will show you the BLM and the roads that you can drive and find a good spot to shoot. If you guys get to come over, Just find me introduce yourselves, and we can talk about it then.

Hope to meet you then.
Gary

IdahoDawgBustr,

Things just changed (My buddy from Weiser is trying to talk me into coming) I am putting the funds together right now. Their is a very good chance I will be up for the shoot.

timmy0283,

COOL! I will be looking for you.

If you have any questions, like, where we are having check-in? or anything else, my office phone number is 208-365-7393, call me anytime.

Gary

IdahoDawgBuster,

Careful, large chunks of the Birds of Prey have been closed to rifle shooting with the new Resource Management Plan.

Just because it is BLM, doesn't mean you can shoot rifles in it.

Here is the link for maps:
http://plicmapcenter.org/view.php?typ=&ag=&st=ID

Boise District BLM can be reached at 208 384-3300 for questions on rifle closures

Here is the map to the closures:

I am trying to get a partner and join the hunt.

Mitch

Chorizo,

Thanks so much for the maps, and the info. I don't hunt south of Boise much, so I didn't know about the closures. But still the maps shows alot of land that can be hunted, looks to be enough for everyone that will be hunting this hunt.

I hope you can find a partner. If not go to our message board and find the Partners forum and put up a request, I am sure someone would be looking for a partner.

Thanks Again for the info. I hope to meet at the shoot.
Gary

I always thought whistle pigs were rockchucks until I moved to Idaho and everybody was calling ground squirrels whistle pigs.

I was told about these whistle pigs last year. Did a 700 mile round trip to shoot hundreds of what I thought were rockchucks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif I was way over gunned for them tiny things with my .223's and .204's. Gun of choice would be a Ruger 10/22 and a 3x9 scope. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif The big guns won't leave anything to weigh. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hey Al,

Thanks for writing.

I was talking to Kevin to our Club President yesterday, and he said the same thing, "I won't be bringing any squrrels in, because I shoot guns that just blow them up, I get a kick out of the explosion, and the pink mist in the air.

That is funny that you mention the 10/22 with 3x9 scope, that is what I shoot. A modified 10/22 with 3x9x40 Tasco World Class. Man is it fun to shoot those squirrels with.

It is fun to shoot them with the big guns, but there is nothing left to pick up.

This shoot is all about having fun, meeting new people that have the same interests as yourselves, getting to drop the hammer on a few hundred primers, then come and have a BBQ with us.

We really want to let people know that we are here, show them what and who we are, what we do for them, that we are growing this club, and hopefully spark some interest in people enough that they will decide to join our club.

So if any of you are in Idaho, SE Oregon, NE Nevada, You all are ALL Invited to come out and have fun with us. We will be glad to see you.

Gary

I just put my 22 on paper (sorta) a couple days ago and it's shooting like MOE (Minute of Elk) at 60 yards /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif Don't know what's wrong with it, but I won't have any squirrels to pick up either /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Glad I read through this was as I am heading over the following week for a bit a extermination work. So to clarify we are talking about sage rats AKA belding ground squirels??? In oregon there are pretty much found only in--on and around irrigated alphafa fields. If what I am reading it correct, you guys have them all over and not just in the alphafa???

What about out of state liscense fees. How much is it going to cost for a day of rat shooting??? Or can we get by without having to contribute while hunting BLM lands???

ajgunner,

I don't know if these have the same name as the ones in Oregon, But! Yeah they are everywhere in the sagebrush, open fields, sandhills with just grass, you name it they are there.

Here is what the Idaho Fish & Game says:

We have 3 options to choose from:

1. Non Resident Yearly Hunting License is $141.50

2. Small Game Hunting (Not valid for the first 5 days of the pheasant season. Valid for upland & migratory game birds, turkeys, cottontail, snowshoe hare, huntable furbearers and unprotected and predatory birds and animals) $81.75

3. Nongame Hunting (valid from January 1 to August 31) $29.25

I think you can purchase these online at:
http://fishandgame.idaho.gov

You can read the Regulation online also.

Thank You for writing.

Wish i could attend, but the semester at the U of I doesn't end til may 15. maybe next year if i don't have a full course load.

sounds like i'll have to use fmj bullets to retain more squirrel rather than having to pick up the pieces from a speer tnt.

coonhuntin,

I am sorry you won't be able to make it. Man, we are going to have a great time.

But, sometimes a guy has to do what he has to do, the job and family seems to come first.

I would just use a rimfire instead, it leaves something to pick up.

See you next year.
