i've been threatening for about two year's now..to go with a 1x4 scope for calling..i finally did it..i bought a leupold vxII in 1x4 power /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gifi visited sportsman's warehouse this afternoon..with the full intention of buying..either a vxII in 2x7..or..vxIII in 2.5x8..mainly because i do like to do some range work & the higher magnification would help in that regard..then i got to thinking for a calling gun..i never turn the magnification above four power anyway..yeah i'll probably shoot better group's with more power..yet in a calling situation will that make a difference..probably not /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dave,

Where I hunt in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, 4X is plenty for most shots. I rarely ever zoom up past 3X or 4X. The only thing about having a higher magnification scope is that you have it if you need it. Otherwise, I'd say you've got a good scope for close range calling.

Something else you might consider, if inclined, is to have a dot reticle installed in the scope. That combo should make for a great "get-on-em-quick" scope. I have a Leupold 3X that's not been made for years and I've considered having a dot placed in that one. Just a thought.

He bought it, I saw it, it's sweet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Dave how is the field of view on that?

I'm looking at smaller more compact scopes, got more runners coming in under 70 yards that coyotes that hang up past 200.

dogboy..because as you know..i have..ZERO..field experiance with this scope..all i can say is i spent about an hour in the store..playing with a few scope's set @ their lowest magnification..& have done this a time or two in the past/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gifi came to the conclusion based on a in-store..test drive that the 1x4..@1power..or@ 2..power is the clear winner in regard's to f.ov. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I have that same scope on my Rem 600 6x45mm and I thinks its great. The scope is very forgiving of eye position when you have to twist around and take that wrong side shot.

I just put a Nikon Monarch UCC 1.5x4.5x20mm Dangerous Game scope on another calling gun, haven't had it out yet but it sure feels good.

i did notice i do see the barrel thru the scope "slightly" when @1-power.."however it's not a "biggie" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't let Dave short change this scope due to lack of "field experiance". Regardless of all the printed stats I looked through it and it felt like I could see the width of a football field. Outside of that the best thing is that it snaped up to the eye and gave a full field of view at that moment. Fantastic scope.

Great Scope Dave /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I can see the barrel when I have my Sightron down on 1.5 power too... I guarantee you that you won't notice it with a charging Coyote at 50yrds.

6MM06 makes a good point too, although I don't know how much that would cost???
with a 2MOA dot and it is great for calling.

+1 that's what were all here for /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Repete and 6mm-06 are you adding the dot to the original duplex or changing out the duplex for crosshairs and a dot?

I have a couple of older Weaver K-3's with crosshairs and dots. I find that they are just great as long as it's nearly full daylight but really wash out at dusk and dawn where my duplexes are still visible.

+1 to RePete, you'll see the barrel at the bench for awhile but when there's fur out there you'll never notice it.

I stumbled onto a deal the other day. I was looking at a Bushnell 3200 Elite 1.5x4x32 Firefly when I was given the opportunity to buy the last one in stock at Jerry's Warehouse in PA, a Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5x6x38 F/F. I jumped on it and have not regretted it one bit. Love that thicker duplex portion on running targets. Big F.O.V., excellent eye relief. It'll be a great call gun scope.

I felt lucky to get it because I don't see them carried anymore, anywhere. Maybe discontinued. Satisfaction is in the eye of the purchaser.

AWS,,, My M8 6X has fine crosshairs and a 2MOA dot. I've had it for 20+ years and have used it in all kinds of situations. The fine crosshairs are kinda subliminal (sp?) to me and help keep the dot centered in the scope.
The 2MOA dot sucks for range work because it's twice the size of the 1" dots I use on my targets at 100. Guess I could use 2" stickers but I doubt that it would help since I can't see squat at 100 with a 6X anyway.
I use this scope on a L461 in 222 that are a perfect match. The rifle's older than the scope so the load work was done a long time ago thankfully.

Kinda surprised by some of these posts, I thought most everyone had 3x9 or bigger on their rifles, some 2x7 fans I'm sure. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Interesting to see folks got smaller scopes and just as happy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Been looking real hard at those 1.5x5 and 1.5x6 with illuminated circle dots for quick target pick up's on some of those close running shots..

I like that large field of view for those fast movers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

A Leupy Mark IV 1.5-5x20 w/SPR reticle is gonna be on my 16" yote whacker carbine, when it's done being overhauled. This is it sitting on the 20".

REAL nice compact optic with a great target/eye centering reticle...

dogboy i know what your saying..when i bought this scope..i dragged my rifle in with me..so i could get it bore-sighted..the fella's behind the counter were pretty good..yet i still think..that they think i'm an idiot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gifof course that's up for debate /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif for using such a short range scope on a 223.i could tell by the look in their eye's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gifi don't think guy's get the fact that it doesn't matter how far one's rifle will shoot..it's all about calling & using the most appropriate equipment for the task @ hand..

Nice set up knockemdown..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Yea Dave bet those boys working on your rifle were target shooters or big game hunters too!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd be thinking big scopes if I lived in the wide open spaces, but I don't.

90 percent of my shots are under 100 yards, don't need a 50mm 14x scope. Only cranked my scope above 6, half dozen times in the last 10 years.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
