.204 Ruger

All else equal, is this a 200, 300, etc. yd. caliber? What's a good make/model bolt action rifle? Looking for something a little more fur friendly than .223

I have a venture predator in 204. Shoots like a dream, and I have fired several 1/2" 5-shot groups with it and my handloads. It has definitely paid for itself. Like Rhett Steele said, 300 yds shouldn't be a problem with the 204.

I'd say 500 yds is max effective range if you're a good shot.

Just for giggles, I did try mine out at 1000 yds. It gets there and surprisingly had a decent group. But, I'm here to tell ya, it barely chipped the paint off the steel plate.

That TC Venture Predator is a good looking rifle, any idea how the scope is that's on it (manufacturer/model, specs, & if it's any good)? I should have mentioned that I prefer a composite stock since I'm rough on my guns & hunt in rain/snow.

I haven't heard anything about the scope that comes on the venture combo. I bought mine without the scope and threw a leupold 3.5-10x40 Vx-3 on it.

C-Z 527 Varmint would be best all-around bet. Hard to find a .204 in any brand that won't shoot accurately; barrel twist with 40 gr./larger bullets only limiting factor. Anything with at least a 24" barrel will wring the most speed from it.

Just got back from checking out a TC Venture Predator. Seems like a darn nice rifle for the $. I wasn't big on the TC 3-9 scope that comes on it but it's prob. not a deal breaker. Could always sell the scope & mount one of my choice on there I guess. Really liked how light the rifle was & how easy it came up. Just felt good overall. Couldn't pull the trigger b/c they had a trigger lock on it but I hear they're owner/user adjustable from 3.5 - 5 lbs. w/ a simple screw inside. Still on the fence bout this rifle, mainly b/c of the scope but I'm prob. going to pull the trigger (pun intended) on a .204 Ruger soon. [beeep] I bought 4 diff. types of .204 Ruger ammo today so it's just a matter of time now

It will fill the bill perfectly....right up to the "fur friendly" part. If you are not happy with the way a 223 full metal jacket bullet handles fur I would not suggest you move to a cartridge that is almost 1000 fps faster and having no non expanding bullets made for it that I know of!!!! I could be wrong, maybe you can get full metal jacket bullets from someone.
Of the "four different types" of ammo that you bought which one does not expand???? I mean, the 204 is so fast I don't know if full metal jacket ammo will not still blow up a coyote...you get to a point with velocity {especially when it approaches 4000 fps} that just the shock of getting hit with it causes tissue to explode.
"Fur friendly 204" is like jumbo shrimp or military intelligence or happy marriage....dude, it aint happening!!!!

Shooting coyotes the 204 is very fur friendly, but I haven't found a load yet that I could shoot a fox broadside without blowing them apart. I've taken a few reds straight on into the chest and not had any fur damage, but that has been the only way.

Personally, I don't have any use for FMJ bullets even if they made them for a 204. They are illegal for hunting in some states and in populated areas really add to the danger of ricochet, JMHO.

The scope is a lower end Bushnell, it's okay and better than many package scopes (which tend to be extremely cheap junk quality no name brand). However for more than just some mild moderate use , and if you want to have a nicer scope that is very solid and great quality for the $I'd buy the non scoped version get a Burris Predator Quest, they make it in the same camo pattern as the predator, Seen people buy this scope for their Predators, I got one myself though selling it to get a black one for my model 7 predator which has a different camo. T/C markets Warne rings for the venture it in black 30$ 50$ for matching camo if I recall. I just got black lol since bolt and grips are black nice contrast.

300$ for the Burris but worth it quality is of scopes costing many times more, light too (15 oz for the 4.5x14!). Otherwise package scope do okay for more casual use but nothing special.

Non scoped version which you can order to your vendor also saves about 50$ or so if I remember depending, I didn't get it since I knew the Burris was a perfect fit for this rifle.

Thanks everyone! Am on the fence about buying the scoped model vs. just the rifle ($100 less w/o the scope) & throwing a scope of my choice (Leupold) on it...

Well get off that fence.

IMO get the one without the scope and buy a better scope to install. Trust me, it will be hard to sell that scope for what you are going to pay for it. Besides used good quality scopes come up for sale pretty often here. Even some new and like new scopes often show up.

I have a CZ 527 American, great little fun, very accurate, light which is important to me anymore lol, and good looking to boot.
