22-250 Load Info

Depends on twist, barrel length, action and intended use.

They can be a hot on barrels if you load them up with 40gr pills. Most brands of rifle are well suited to and will stabalise the 55gr pill. Nosler VMax are quite explosive and do the job for making small game lift off. A little tougher and with great BC are the Sierra Ballistic Kings. Less BC, but real good on anything from rabbits to goats are the 55gr Sierra Game Kings. If you don't intend shooting beyong 300yds then have a look at the Sierra Pro Hunter 55gr pills. They have lower BC, but it really won't matter at less than 300yds. They have a flat base which is easier to give greater accuracy and gives greater room in the case for powder.

I have tried Varget and a list of other powders. I do find that for the same pressure signs and accuracy I get way better fps from Alliant Reloader 15. Each rifle varies in case capacity so the load in my rifle may not be safe in yours. For RE15 and 55gr pills I'd start at 34gr and work up 'til you find your sweet spot.

Lapua have released 22-250 cases. They are the best when considering the brass toughness, case capacity, consistancy and level of engineering. Buy it once and its all over.

Many people have varying opinions about bullet seating depth. Read what Horday have to say about it and then make up your mind (http://www.hornady.com/ballistics-resource/internal). For my part in my two 22-250s I found that seating .020" from the lands worked for me. But that's in my kit not yours.

I do note that Federal primers use thinner cup brass. That leads them to show pressure signs very early. I ended up using CCI BR2 primers. A fair bit tougher, but be careful with pressure.

I hope that helps

Hey Happy,
Have you been in my log book? Great advice on that load! I haven't switched over to the Lapua Brass and frankly probably won't (for a while at least) only because I have so much Remington and Winchester 22-250 brass that puts down reasonably tight groups at 100 yds. I also only shoot paper, but strive for accuracy within 5 shot groups. I've found that in my Ruger M77 MKII 22-250 really likes, 55 gr Sierra Blitzkings, being pushed by 34.9 grs of RE-15, and capped off by CCI-BR2 primers are the most accurate combo for me.

+1 on 55 gr blitzking. I really like this bullet. I use 8208 xbr. Its been very stable velocity and accuracy. Look on the Hodgdon reloading data center website is where i got my information.

Hi,
Some times the Blitz King can be hard to stabilise because it is one of the longer 55gr pills, but it's worth it to try. Its Ogive is further forward than most so its easier to get near the lands than many others using a standard, shop bought rifle.

For my Remington's I have stayed with just two powders:
RL-15 & 52gr Speer HP.*
H-4895 & 55gr Vmax (moly) - (this is the load that I have been using for the last 3 yrs now)

*this powder/bullet also took many coyotes with a Sako Forester.

I shoot 39 grs of H380 with a CCI bench rest primer and a Sierra 55gr. soft point and it is dead accurate out of mr Sako Forester 22-250 and I use it for everything from Ground Squirrels to Coyotes and it's deadly.

I have good luck in my X-Bolt with 39.5Gr of H380. WIN case, WIN Mag primer and 55Gr sierra game king hollow point.
