22-250 velocity question.

I added a cooper 22-250 to my collection a couple weeks ago and I'm trying to work up a load. Coopers recommended load of 36.5 gr of H380 behind a 50 gr blitz king shoots great and runs around 3600 fpm. I worked my way up to 38 gr in .2 gr increments and kept similar groups, but saw very small if any speed increase. I guess I'm wondering if others have seen this? I'd hate to stop on 3600 fps, that's only 300 fps faster than I'm shooting them in my 223, with 10 more grs of powder. I was hoping to have more explosive results in the prarie dog town.
 
I used to get 3600 with a 55gr nosler and 38gr of h380 switch to a different bullet try a 50gr nosler, I have found in my rifles that nosler's seem to fly the fastest, so do the berger vld's.
 
I have over 1000 blitz kings that I was hoping to shoot, switching bullets is a last resort. I was able to get around 3700 fps using RL15. Might try that again

You might try a different powder.

H-4895, Varget, or 4007-SSC are all winning powders for that bullet weight in the 22-250, and they are temperature stable, which is a big deal if you are going to whack PD's.

hogdon start load is 38gr of h30 and max at 41gr. they list 38gr with a 50gr sierra sp going 3562fps so Id say you are right on par with what h380 will do.

if you had no signs of pressure you could keep going with h380 or try a diff powder

I was thinking that was kinda a light load, but I shoot 55gr so I wasn't sure. I think I clocked mine at 3800 and some change fps with 40gr of 380. It's been a while so I don't remember exactly.

Every gun is different I stuck my bolt on my 22-250 with 39.5 grains of h380.
 
Different powder. H-380 is sooo yesterday.

IMR-4007ssc or RL-17 would get my nod.

I am currently running 53gr bullets at 3875fps. I can push 55gr bullets to 3900fps. All with dog town accuracy and then some.

It's all in the potion.
 
Interesting. I bought a higher dollar Weatherby Mark V varmint rifle a few years ago and researched powder, it was all about the H-380 being the best powder for 22-250 so I bought some and tried it out. Lower velocities and the worst grouping of the powders I tried out of my rifle. I tried tons of different loads with H-380 and a few different bullets before changing to Benchmark. My rifle is now sub MOA all day long with 50 Gr. Vmax and 35 grains of benchmark in the lower 3900 FPS range. Varget also shot very well out of my gun but I never ran it through a chrony to check velocities.
 
I honestly dont like h380, my standard 250 liked varget and h4895, my best groups were with 4895 and 55gr nosler. The h380 worked good in mild temps but when it warmed up I would start to get flat primers and it shot like crap. I would like to try 4007ssc but that stuff is impossible to get here.

I must be old school!!! 3600 is flat out fast in the real world !! You can read all the data you want but chrony a load at 3600 fps and shoot some stuf with it . It is flat out quick. I have taken the 22-250 to 3950 with 5o's and that is smoking hot ! Mark

With modern powders, 3600-3700fps in the 22-250 is old news. Get out and walk around the block. It's a new powder world.

One of my -250's has a 26" barrel. 3900+fps with 55's is easy.

The 22-250 today is the Swift of old with new powders. Just think about what the new swift can do!

I think you missed my point. If you have shot the 22's at 3900 what is left to gain??? If I want more velocity with a better trajectory than I will load my .204 to flat primers. If I want to buck wind i will load my 243 with some 70's at 3400 fps. And if I want to just kill sh$#! I will get out my 25-06 with 100s at 3300 out of the 26 in tube.!!!! Mark ..........and yes I am old school I still have 25 bob i shoot yotes with on a regular basis...

Well..... You and your 25-06 can rule the world for all I care.

Your 204 will not buck the wind.

Your 243 is not as flat.

Your 25-06 is in a different chapter.

And your still a boooob!
