.22 mag, bulged barrel.

Kinda bummed out. Clean my dads old mosberg .22 mag and noticed a bulge in the barrel. Looked in the barrel and can see what the cleaning rod was telling me. Was going to get my boy out and have him shoot that at his first coyote till I can afford to get him a center fire. Now I got to scramble around and try to find something for him to use this year since I can't come up with the money till hopefully next year.

Now the question is is it safe to try to shoot it and how will it group? Think I will give it a try at the range and see if it's safe and if it will group. Thinking saftey glasses are in need. My dad said it has alway been like that since he got it when he traded some traps for it and I have head shot squirrels at 50 yards with it in my younger days.

Wish me luck. Still bummed about possiably not having a rifle for the boy though.

Safety is my concern! The Bulge is noticible!

It's just about at the end of the forearm of the stock. So I don't think it would be leagal lenth.

I have an old Sears 22 that was made by Winchester originally. It was a bulge in the barrel. A BIG one actually. I got it when I was in college and never knew any better. I have thought about it some since, but it shoots as good as any other .22 I have and has never caused and issue. I started watching ejected brass and still never saw anything that looked dangerous. Now I do keep and eye on it. If I ever get a shot that doesn't feel right or sounds funny I check the bore. That hasn't ever been a problem but I keep it in the back of my mind....

You can see the bulge where the reflection gets wider in the circle. The bulge is actually .015-.018 larger then the rest of the barrel. It shoots great, never checked its speed but it has killed more squirrels then all my other .22's put together.

Typically an obstructed bore, SB. Could be something as minor and small as a cleaning patch. Not enough room for the round and the obstruction to get down the barrel together.

I would let him use it as is. I don't think there is a safety nor accuracy issue. Had a Nylon 66 with a bulge behind rear sight and it functioned and shot fine with typical minute of coke can accuracy. TTT

Thats the thing, when I was young I could hit what I aimed at and it was like that. The whole dead spot while cleaning the barrel got me thinking.

It will never be a match rifle with a bulge in the barrel, but it should be fine for plinking. I can't see a safety issue with the 22 mag (edited to remove "LR"), but being the paranoid type, I'd probably retire the rifle.

Just about every rifle has a spot in the barrel. Push a tight patch through your barrel. Bet it doesn't feel the same all the way down unless you have a krieger, leiga, ect. Shoot it.

It's more than just a spot. Thats just how I noticed it. The inside of the barrel disappers there when you shine a light in it and look and it's bulged on the outside. Just never noticed it before, but the last time I messed with it was when I was 16. It shot then so I'm goingto give it a try.

I have a couple of rifles that you can feel a difference in the barrel when pushing a patch through them...While neither has a visible bulge, in your case and with a .22lr, I don't think there is any reason for concern either...
