.22 mag revolver

I'm looking into getting one. I've done a little research and I read that it is bad to buy a 22lr and 22 mag capable gun because the dia. of the barrel is to big for the mag?

I'm not wanting to spend more than $300. I've been looking at the Heritage Rough riders and I've heard mixed reviews. Such as getting bent, horrible accuracy... If in the end, I do get one of those I was looking at a 9"bbl.

I'm hoping for 2" groups at 30 yards. That kinda a good standard to have, at least I think. Because lets say I'm squirrel hunting..his vitals are about the size of a 50 cent piece.

Thanks

Any other recommendations? I am wanting to stay with revolvers.

Thats not true!!!!Get the Ruger Single Six with adjustable sights and 6 1/2" barrel. Trust me for all around hunting it can't be beat! You will love it!!

What kind of groups do you get with the 22 mag cylinder? 50 yards??

50yds.?!!!!Holy cow thats a long shot for the rimfire pistol, and Im not the best shot. I can hit at 50 and even 100yds. but shooting for groups I havent done. Trust me spend the little extra money and get the Ruger Single Six. Dick Metcalf did a very good article in Guns and Ammo a few years ago on the Ruger single six you need to read it.

One of the few guns that I've sold and immediately regretted was a 5 1/2" barreled ruger single six. If you haven't shot a 22 mag revolver before, be prepared for amount of noise that comes out of them. I shot mine with muffs as I do all my guns, but I also used it to dispatch a few coyotes that still had a bit left in them when I got to them. I can tell you that 22 mag cartridge out of a revolver will flat make your ears ring!

I have one of those Heritage pieces of crap and I would NOT buy one a total waste of money. They are not accurate and miss fires all the time(and with a six gun

)

My understanding is that the barrel's actually sized for the mag making the 22lr to small but there's an ongoing debate as to wheather it effects accuracy. Who knows what the truth is?

My 5.5" SS is great for dispatching trapped Cats and Coon, but I doubt that I could hit "You" at fifty yards, let alone a Squirrel. Course I'm a crappy shot with a handgun and didn't buy it for hunting.

I'd get the Ruger.

The article was in Complete book of Rimfires 2009. Sorry about that. But in the article Dick got 1,778fps. out of the 6 1/2" barrel Ruger and CCI 30gr. V-max ammo! Thats alot of power in a rimfire pistol. Loud? You bet! But when you are pushing that kinda velocity from a pistol its going to be loud. And thats almost 500fps. faster than the Sako 24" barrel 22LR shooting the Remington 33gr. Yellow Jacket did in the same article. Anyway, very good read.

Check out the Taurus 991 tracker 22 mag, 9 shot revolver,
6.5" barrel, or the Tracker model 17, .17 HMR, 7 SHOT revolver, 6.5" barrel, both are stainless with a MSRP of
around $500.Nice looking guns though!

A Ruger Single-Six is the one to get. Don't forget you can also shoot 22 WRF ammo in a 22 mag chamber, it brings it down to 22 LR levels.

I have five of them and they are awesome, the oldest one I purchased new in 1971 when the New Model Single-Six came out. All Stainless Steel 6 1/2, one has a 1.5X scope on it and the others all have custom Williams sights. Not good for squirrel hunting though, they blow them in half....

I just ordered my first Ruger Single Six for $488 out the door and should be in possession of it on Thursday. The question about the diameter of the barrel, your prolly thinking of the warning about shooting .22lr out of the .22 mag. cylinder. The .22 mag. case is slightly larger than the .22lr and they warn the .22lr case could rupture if used in the mag. cylinder. Oh, by the way I got the 6 1/2 inch stainless model. You could get the blued model a little cheaper.

The best .22m revolver out there is actually a .38. What do you get when you buy a .22lr revolver? A squirrel and bunny gun. What do you get when you buy .22m revolver? A squirrel and bunny gun. What do you get when you buy a .38? A squirrel, bunny, bad guy, coyote, etc gun. Step up to a .357 and you can still shoot cheap .38's or move up to .357's for deer and black bear. And in the grand scheme of things .38 ammo isn't much more expensive than .22M and cheaper if you start to reload.

For $300 find yourself a well used S&W or Ruger and go at it.

I've had a Heritage Rough Rider for a little over 6 years now and have never had any problems with it.And it's been used alot.I got to where I can hit a golfball or knock the bottle cap off of a bottle at 15 yards fairly regularly with it so the accuracy isn't too bad.It shoots the .22Mags alot better than the .22lr but I really don't use the .22Mag cylinder much. But I like it because it's not somethin I have to worry about gettin scratched up or anything like that but still accurate and reliable enough to get the job done.

Be sure to wear ear plugs if you're shootin .22Mags out of a revolver. They're pretty noisy.

Well the decision has been made...................................................................
..................................................................................357 MAG.

I know it a little bigger than the 22 mag but,I've got bigger animals I would not mind sending a bullet into.

So,as far as the 357 mag goes, are there any good viable options? I'm not really sure where to start looking? I've had ideas for the Thompson Center pistols or a SA or DA

Thanks
