22 Magnum recommendations.

Greeting from Crossville Tennessee!
Hey guys, I'm restricted to rimfire-only predator (Coyote) hunting at my local WMA. I've decided to go with the 22 magnum variety and I'm looking for advice on from you all.
I'll be limiting my shots to less than 100 yards, and I'll probably be walking quite a lot, thru the woods, so portability is a factor.
I'm looking at the Savage A22 magnum, the Ruger American, and the Ruger Precision Rifle. What would you all recommend for Coyotes?

Thanks everybody!!

I think I would wait a while on the RPR, its pretty new and I would wait on the reviews to start coming out. I had a RPR in 22LR when they first came out and it shot really good. Reviews on the newer ones are a little sketchy. It a magnum is what your after, I'd be looking at the Henry lever guns. But thats just me.

I have the Ruger American in 22mag. and really like it. It impressed me accuracy wise. Its preference is the 30gr. Hornady, but if I was using it for Coyote size predators I would be using the Win. 40gr hp which has worked very well for me in the past.

Magnum Research makes a nice 22 Mag rifle if you don't mind shooting just 40 grain or heavier bullets in it. It uses a special under barre gas port and anything lighter than 40 grain bullets can cause issues and will void the warranty. On the flip side of that, it will be extremely accurate for a 22 Mag rifle.

I have the Magnum Lite 22WMR Graphite Hogue OverMolded Rifle and it is a definite shooter.

My neighbor has a Magnum Research 22 Mag that he has shot twice. These are semi autos. He wants $650 for it plus $25 in postage. He is 76.

Also have the Ruger American and do recommend it. I think its a great value.
It comes with muzzle threads, which is a must have, vs others.
Trigger is decent, and can be modified for lower lbs pull, like all Ruger American bolts.
Mine likes both 30 & 40 gn rounds.
And welcome to PM.

Might want to check out the CZ512 22mag. Have one I've been using when I predator hunting and haven't had any issues no matter what grain bullet I've run through it. Also haven't had any problems with the 10 round magazines.

The 17 WSM is pretty much the top dog in the rimfire world and delivers quite a bit more energy than does the other rimfires so that would be the direction I would go.

If you're set on a 22 Mag and you want something compact, light, and holds a lot of ammo, maybe take a look at the Kel Tec CMR30. I don't have a CMR30 but I do have their PMR30 which is the pistol version and it shoots, as well as functions, very well.

Penetration and weight retention is what you want stick with the 22 Magnum! Try the 40gr game point best yote round out!

I would definitely stick with the 22 mag for coyotes. Besides, if you buy a 17 WSM and you don't want to spend much money, you're stuck with the B-GAG.........uh, whoops, I mean B-Mag.........

OInappreciate the replies!
One of the main things that I'm undecided about is the semi-autos vs bolt actions. I understand the issues that the 22M have with the delayed-blowback systems.

Even though, I'd much prefer the semi, because I'd have a quick follow up shot anytime it was needed.

I used a savage 22 mag. clip fed bolt action. I use 40gr, HP. I prefer the 40gr, JHP but the batch of Winchester I had were unreliable, some fired some didn't. I would not hesitate if a shot opportunity arose out to 150yds. But I also know that I could get a runner though I never did. Without snow I could loose one.

Now our law in NY states it has to be 22 caliber or smaller during our deer season.

So, I bought a 17 Hornet CZ Varmint. I use the 25gr.HP I never had one run. My farthest one was 235yd.

This is just my opinion, but with the Magnum Research rifle, I don't feel that you would ever have a problem with the blow back issues.

The MR rifle uses a "Unique Gas-Assisted Blowback Operation"/underbarrel blow black bleeder system which bleeds off excessive pressure. The only Magnum Research requirement is that the user must use 40 grain or heavier bullets for the system to work properly. Use of lighter bullets will invalidate the rifle warranty if issues occur.

I also have a CZ and an older Marlin semi-auto rifle in 22 Mag, and I have never had a problem with either. I've had the CZ for about three years now and the Marlin I've had for maybe 20 years.

For the record, the Magnum Research rifle is very accurate. The "Unique Gas-Assisted Blowback Operation" is how Magnum Research describes the bleeder block system. You can find more information at their web site.

HTH........
