22 WMR question

Hello all /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I recently adjusted the trigger on my Savage 93 down to 2 1/4 pounds. I checked to make sure the barrel wasn't rubbing on the stock. I then shot groups at 50 and 100 yds. I have tried the Remington Premier 33 gr BT, the Federal 50 gr HP, and the Winchester 40 gr JHP.

My groups were not as tight as I thought a 22 mag would do. Somewhere in the neighborhood of .75 at 50 yds and 1-1.5 inches at 100 yds.

Do any of you WMR shooters have any suggestions? POI is consistant but I wonder if I should just try different brands of ammo to find the bullet my rifle likes the most? Do I need to glass bed the stock? Or, do I need to not be whining about these groups and just take it into the field?!
I don't want to shoot mosquitos or anything but I DO like to have a fairly accurate rifle /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have a Marlin 25m which is my do all. In my rifle the Remington 33gr V-maxx bullets work great. depending on the range you wanna shoot there are several options. Outland sales makes 3 different .22 mag rounds
1: 35 gr V-maxx uncoated at 2045 fps
2: 35 Gr vmaxx Molly Coated 2065 fps
3 my personal fav if you can afford them 35 gr Coyote Killer V-maxx at 2265 fps from a compresed charge very accurate round but as in all .22s you have to find what it likes. Those groups arent bad id say you could do better though after a little trial. if you hae any more questions about ammo let me know i have a ballistics program that I can run for you and make up a chart for long range sniping

Those sound like good groups for a factory savage or marlin rifle...now it sounds like you might be able to fine tune it a little with ammo. My Marlin likes Winchester silver box JHP, and CCI maxi-mag...try different ammos, and you will shrink up those groups some...but the .22 Mag is a hunting round, not a bench rest round, at least not out of a factory $250 or less rifle.

I shoot the Remingtons 33s also they shoot great for me I have a ruger mod 77 with the target barrel. What kind of bench rest are you shooting from? I switched to a good sand bag style rest to sight in with and tightened my groups quite a bit. At a hundred yard now I can just about keep all my shots in a quarter still get a flier every now and then.

With the remington 33 gr bullets im getting a little under an inch. with the Coyote killers around an inch group but it hovers around that 1 inch mark a long way. VERY nasty groundhog round out to 200 yds. Will do in a coyote at that range too if your rifle shoots them well

.75 at 50, and a touch under an inch at 100...I have a 6x scope on it and that helps too...it is a Marlin 783 and it is Box stock as it came from the factory.

It also liked those 50 grain federals, just a very little bit tighter groups..but too bad...I'm out of those, and they quit making them....so its back to the 40s...

One inch groups at 100 yards is not bad at all from the .22 Maggie. The little "magnum" may not be quite as accurate as the Long Rifle cousin, all in all. It lacks the poop to be shooting coyotes beyond that, and, honestly if I wanted to shoot smaller targets at longer ranges I might opt for the more accurate and flatter shooting .17 HMR if I needed to stay in the rimfire bracket. If I needed more range for flatter shooting at small targets, more accuracy at extended ranges for small vermin, or more "umph" for larger critters, then I'd move up to a little centerfire such as the .221 Fireball. As it stand, if I were you and could consistently shoot sub MOA with a .22 Magnum, then I'd take it to the field and apply it to game under suitable situations and conditions. Trying to make it something that it's not is a recipe for trouble.

Well, it sounds like I have a typical 22 mag, accuracy-wise. I already have a self-imposed rule of 100 yds and under for coyotes with good shot placement. It sounds like I will have to try a few other brands of ammo and see how things shake out. Thanks for the input and I'll keep you posted on the end result

I think GC pretty much nailed it. Even the best rimfire ammo and rifles can not come close to what centerfire rifles can do.

Rimfire accuracy, if you want the best, is very expensive and even then can not come close to centerfire accuracy.

Me personally I LOVE my Marlin 25m. The .22 magnum round is a great round and effective enough for doing anythingyou need to do. As far as all the centerfire talk yeah i love to see things explode to but as my grand dad always told me " you gotta race with what ya brung to the track"

I've got a Marlin 882 stainless that will shoot the remington vmax 32 gr. much better than the CCi Maxi Mags, and the Coyote Killer custom loads pretty good too. It's about 2" at 100 yards. However, this rifle seems to kill everything I shoot with it. Under hunting conditions, it is as accurate as any rifle. Myabe I don't shoot well from the bench??
BTW, the Coyote Killer ammmo is pretty awesome firepower for the .22 mag. Try some if you can stand the price and you won't be disappointed.

I had the trigger done on my 25mn, and man I like it.
Darknight your groups are good. I found the Rem/CCI psp accurate, the Winchester supremes are a slammin 22wmr round too, but not so cheap.

That simply isn't true. The .22 Magnum is a neat little round and works well for what it is suited for. It has its niche. It is not a "do all be all" round for any application. Trying to force it into work to big for its britches will leave you wanting for more gun and a better end result. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your intent with this statement and you mean it's effective for the posters intended and particular application. It isn't a 200+ yard do it all round for a variety of varmint/predator applications. And that certainly and absolutely includes coyote hunting.

I second that. Winchester 34gr JHP Supremes are my favorite mag round and shoot the best out of my 882. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I do believe the point of this forum was to find out info in Darknight's .22 magnum then all of a sudden you come in here talkin about 221 fireball this centerfire that. So yes What ever darknight wants to do with his .22 magnum it is his perogative. All the guy wanted to know was about ammo for a .22 magnum. Not .221 fireball this and centerfire that . Geez. Maybe he like myself likes his .22 magnum, Maybe just maybe it is all he has probably not but hypothetically maybe so. You absolutly added NO useful information to his subject. Maybe you like to feel like we are all sittin on your knee listenin to your ever present wisdom, But I'm pretty sure you dont have the Correct answer to everything. Now I know my ability and im sure everyone else in this room knows thiers. So ill just keep on keepin on doin what i'm doin and im sure they will too. And as far as the " that simply isnt true comment" What makes it untrue? The fact that you say it cant be done? Wow present me with viable tangible proof and ill believe it tangible meaning I wanna see occular proof not somethign someone wrote, Not something someone says. I joined this thing to share the things ive learned and learn a few more things I didnt know. In my buisiness if you know everything better retire. I am always learning something new. But when someone tells me something " just simply isnt true" well Im gonna call you on it there GC. I may be new to this forum but ive had a rifle in my hand with my dad and grand dad since i was 5. I shot More Varmints than I can count. So i know what i'm Capable of and I know what my rifle and particular loading is capable of. And yes I do have other fire arms several different pieces of " Heavy Artillery" But I save those for there calling. I see enough blood and gore when I make a kill I like a "Clean" Kill. I dont like to get dirty. So there. Now Ive seen youve posted alot of comments, and you probably been here a good long while and the administrators of this forum may get angry with me maybe suspend my account possibly even bann my account. well I do certainly hope that doesnt happen but come what may. If I offended you well you offended me too so I guess we are even.

Those Winchester supremes are NASTY loads hit hard and do a good job. I love them but i cant find them anymore. If you locate a good supply maybe i can talk the wife into using the good ole credit card.
