.22 wmr .vs .17hmr which one ??

22 Mag I believe ammo for these is still a little cheaper than 17 HMR. the only time I have killed a coyote with 17 HMR was a head shot. Ive seen a 22 mag drop allot more. Really just comes down to preference.

I was on a prairie dog hunt a few year ago. One of the guys had a cheapie New England .17 Hummer he asked me if I wanted to try. There were a few dogs looking at us at about 170 yards distant and I figgured what the heck sure why not where's the ammo?

Don't remember the glass too well, but I think it was a Cataracts 3x9 Nevercleer model. I couldnt tell you what the trigger pull broke at because I had the wrong scale. I was using a trigger pull scale and what I needed was a bathroom scale. It was heavy!

But for some reason, God knows why, it shot and it shot well. Watching the hits on those dogs just astounded me. Oh, no blow up- heck no. But in one side and toss a few guts out the other and down goes a dead pasture pooch every time. OK, I was impressed. Not as impressed as a hit with my .17 Remmy at the same distance, but hey- it was fun to have! Sure a LOT better killer than a .22 lr is you bet!

17HMR kill with great shot placement using the 20g not the 17g (they will run off and you never fine them). I have killed with heat and heart shots. They dropped or ran 20yrds and rolled.

I would however get the 22mag. It has a heavier bullet and will kill with out great shot placement. They don't go far after you hit them with one.

The 17hmr will blow around like crazy if there is any wind. Ammo for the 22 mag is cheaper. I would go with the 22mag.

"Cataracts 3x9 Nevercleer model" Now that's funny.

Neither for Coyotes

Get a centerfire and make a clean kill.

For plinking, Squirrl, Rabbit, and such,,, the HMR will probably be more accurate.

I have owned several 22 mags over the years, one cost me over $800. I will never own another because of their lack of accuracy. The 17 hummer is one of the most fun rifles that I have every owned. Love the capability of "puffing" black birds out to 150 yards. It isn't my choice for coyotes but I wouldn't hesitate on a target of opportunity!

Sounds like the guys who have actually used a rimfire on coyotes know what they're talking about in this thread...

.22 magnum no doubt for coyotes...

I killed a lot of yotes with the 22 Mag using the 40g Winchester HP.

50 yds and under is a sure kill, 75 probably, past 75 and it is all about perfect shot placement.

My longest shot was 150 yds, fontal shot in the chest, DRT.

If you hit them in the stomach, they are GONE!!!

We have seen this question numerous times and the folks who have actually used both within the limits of the cartridges usually come down on the side of the 22 mag. ackleyman has it right. As to the statment on accuracy that is a gun and shooter thing. Some don't think a gun is accurate unless it is 1/2 moa when at the range limits of the 22 mag 1 1/2 moa will kill just fine. I have a CZ 22 mag that is well under 1 moa and have killed many woodchucks, coon and fox with it.
As to the OP I would go with the 22 mag for the uses mentioned.

thanks guys , the only time i would shoot a coyote with one is if im out and about and i get a good shot on it ,, i bought me a cheap .22 mag and im having problems with how accurate it is.. it wasnt in the best of shape rust on the barrel and the bore and action had a lot of gunk in it ,, i got it homw cleaned it really good. took it out and shot it at 50 and 100yrds.. at 100yrds i was geting a inch group with 40grain fmj and almost a 2inch group with 30 v-max( had a flyer),( i blow alot of stuff out of the bore) got home cleaned again , so i took it back yesterday and i was lucky to get a 3inch group with the 30 v-max and 1 1/2 with 40 fmj at first intill the barrel got full of gunk . the dirty it got the better it shot ..... the bore looks good but do you think maybe it has pitted the barrel ,, its makeing me mad b/c i hate a gun that dont shoot well... i have heard good about hte .17hmr and was think about trading this onr of for one

A .17 is not more accurate than a .22 I depends on the rifle. I have both and shoot them a lot. Mostly at crows. The 33gr Rem. 22mags seem to shoot just about as flat as the .17 HMR and the crows don't seem to notice the difference. I recomend Savage, You can't beat the performance at any price.

tntrapper, I'm in the same boat as you. A lot of coon callin and small game hunting but wanted to be packing enough gun to try shots at coyotes if they presented themselves. Option 1 may very well be a shotgun. It would, more than likely, work best for you. Keep a small game load in the chamber followed by some buckshot in the mag. But excess noise when calling coon was a factor for me. Now believe me when I say this, I've never had luck when using rimfires on coyotes. Runners everytime. But what I decided on (when I find one for sale) is a .22M in a semi. Maybe a pump or lever gun too. Wanted fast follow up shots, I'll need em.
