220 swift and 25-06 yote pics

Quote:
.220 swift with a 40g NBT (BC of .221) @ 4400fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, drops 27.4 at 500, and 49.8 at 600.

.204 Ruger 32g VMAX BC of .210 at 4250fps. 100y zero. Drops 30.9 at 500, and 56.2 at 600.

Like I said, for the FASTEST and FLATTEST shooting, PERIOD, the swift wins time and time again. There is simply no replacement for displacement.

For efficiency, you bet the 204 wins hands down. That was not my deciding factor, and reguarding all the marketing hype about the 204 being the baddest, fastest, flattest shooting cartridge simply is not true.

You mention flattest and fastest.... My 6mm-06 will spit out a 55 grain nosler BT (BC of .276) at no less than 4400 fps. Run that in your little program and try and tell me the swift is king. You want something flat out to 600 yards the 6mms walk all over the 204 and the 220 swift. If you want a real long range hammer for calling yotes look no further than the 257 stw. Mine shoots 85 grain BTs at 4220 fps (BC is .331) into the 4s all day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

223 wssm will do 4600 fps w/ a 40 gr. bullet using 45.2 gr. imr 4064 according to the latest hornady manual. Fastest 220 swift loads show 4300 (respectively). Still apples to oranges?

You guys are comparing wildcats to standard cartridges, apples to oranges here guys...

Ok, both of my 243s (standard) shoot 55 nosler bts with a (bc of .276) at between 4100 and 4150 fps. Bests your swift in drop, down range energy, and drift. Gotta love BC.

Whoa Kyotekiller25,

Your running numbers that fit the way you want to read them.Your comparing way over max loads on the swift and comparing them to factory ammo .204 ruger with a lower B.C bullet.Nosler puts the fastest max load for the swift with a 40 grain BT at 4200 fps.I don't doubt you are getting the velocity you state(4450 fps).Because I have a friend that claims he's Chronoed his .204 with 32 grain Blitzkings at 4350 fps. With a B.C of .221 on the blitzking that gap you say there is between the swift and the 204 has just narrowed quite a bit.Run those numbers a see what you get.Apples to Apples remember. If you want to test factory ammo then test the Hornady 40 grain Vmax in the swift to the Hornady 32 grain Vmax in the 204 ruger.Again they're different guns for different applications. As for me I'll take the .204. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Good Hunting Chad

Good looking pictures Kyotekiller25. I shoot a Swift and have for years. I shoot 55gr bal-tips in the Swift, wouldn't even consider shooting 40gr bullets through it, I like the energy the 55gr retain at distance. Trajectories are similar between the 40gr and 55gr at any achievable (for me) distance. All my coyotes are called, so a looong shot would be 350 yards. Most guys who are into long range shooting/hunting and knowledgeable about it use bullets with a high BC, I doubt they would even look at a .224 40gr bullet. As for the .204...I think it is a great round, saw my buddy use it on quite a few coyotes this last year, impressive little round. But I still like the Swift better lol. Here is a picture of myself and a friend after a day calling a couple months back. I'm shooting my Swift and he was shooting his 25-06 that day.

All of this is why I keep one of each around /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif got it covered no matter what /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif.

I'm not sure why everyone is so bent out of shape regarding speed. I shoot Sierra 55grn HPBTs out of my Swift at aroung 3700 fps. This is by all acounts slooooow. But you would never guess that by the number of dead varmints I've collected. To date my longest shot was on a woodchuck out side Penn State University the shot was ranged at 528 yds. My best was at 423yds on a chuck that refused to give me anyhting more than the top 3/4 of an inch of its head. Those two were back in the summer of 1996. Last week this same rifle and load (why fix it if it ain't broke) collected a nice Colorado coyote at 370yds. The fact of the matter is most of us will never notice the difference in a purely numbers game. I shot the heck out of that swift to the point that it became and extension of me. That's what makes a rifleman. At this point in my life I have more guns than I'll ever be able to shoot (no I don't want to sell any of them)and because of that I don't shoot any of them as well as I would like. In short find somethng that works and stick with it. The more you shoot it the better you'll be.

2blackdogs,

I'm with you 100%.I was just trying to point out that if you want ballistics out of the .204 ruger it run with the big boys /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif.

I am currently using 2 loads in my .204 ruger.

1)35 grain Bergers with a rather low B.C(.191)I'm running them at around 3900 fps, they are extremely accurate and are instant death to coyotes out to 300 yrds, with very little pelt damage.

2)45 grain Hornady soft points with a B.C(.245)I'm shooting these at 3625 fps, great hard hitting bullet out to 400+ yards on coyotes.

If I were in on some praire dog shooting I would probably shoot the 39 grain blitzkings with a B.C of(.287) and try to run them 3800 fps.FWIW Good Hunting Chad

Well said, I too agree 100% /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

p.s. my swift loads are creeping along a little over 3700fps...coyotes don't seem to notice

Funny... I'm shooting a regular, run of the mill, OLD, and SLOW .223 rem out of my AR using 52gr match hollow point from black hills ammo.

They are comin out of my 16" barrel at around 3150fps... and I've got 17 dead coyotes in the back of my truck over the last two weeks that say it doesn't matter for squat what you are shooting... The only thing that matters is if you are a GOOD HUNTER... or a BAD hunter.

All this talk about speed and such and nobody even MENTIONS the true king of the hill when it comes to ballistic champions: The Lazzeroni Firebird.

How does a 120gr bullet @ 3900fps sound?
How does 15" drop @ 500yds sound?

Better show some respect where it's due before ANYBODY goes mouthing off about any cartridge.

Wow. That is a lot of yotes to be shot in 1 day. Were you hunting in california?? Congratulations!! I never knew california had that many yotes.

Sorry, I wasn't actually talking about your post, I just click reply on the last guy who posts. Your feat of 17 in 2 weeks is still great accomplishment. I was talking about the guy a little above who looks like they killed 9 in 1 outing. I'm lucky to score 2 in a day. I've only done it twice in my life.
