.222 Rem vs. .223 Rem

I currently own a Weatherby Super Predator Master in .223 and like the round, but I recently acquired a Blaser R93, which accepts multiple caliber barrels. My intent was to sell my hunting rifles and have one gun with multiple barrels. I have a choice between .222 or .223 with the Blaser. I hunt in a semi-residential area and I'm concerned with report noise. I noticed the .222 round itself does not measure up to the .223 ballistically, but does that mean it possibly quieter? Thanks.

dallas let me recomend the ultimate coyote rifle remington 700 your choice of caliber with a fine 3x9 leupold vari x I

Have to agree with Craig S.My wife shots a Weatherby SPM in 243. It is quite impressive. Very light, well balanced and very accurate.Wished it was mine.

cgaig s thanks for the reply. what are you shooting for ammo. i only use hornady 40gr. v-max non moly factory ammo,im worried about the 1-12 twist.you think it will be ok with the little 40 grainers? thanks again.

I shoot the Federal Premium 50 grain Speer "TNT" hollow points through it. I've never tried shooting anything lighter, but then again I've never had any trouble with any of the various rounds that I've tried.

dallas I am telling ya man get a remington 700 and put yourself a good ole leupold vari X I 3x9 youll be happier than cowiche hillbilly

JDB how many bobcats have you killed with a remington,at least put a weaver on it and youll might see more game.oh,and i am a cowiche hillbilly just like you.see ya in the morning.

Sorry, I have to admit to being opinionated as all hell on this. I have a pair of .222Rems., a Remington 40XBBR and a Sako Varminter. They are both unbelievably accurate, .2 to .3" (5 at 100yds) They will do this all day. In spite of it's popularity I've never been a big fan of the .223 although I do like the Savages with a twist that allows you to shoot heavier bullets.
Long live the triple deuce! Best wishes.

JDB,

I have 2.5 Remington 700 BDL's one in 30-06 and one in 338 WM with 3x9 Leupold VXII's on them (the .5 is the downsized 700, the Remington 541S in .22LR). Yes, they are all very accurate and I love them – but they would not be my first choice for varmints. However, that is not the question at point here... I am beginning my search for a special purpose varmint gun (Yotes, cats, dillos and p dogs), right now I am leaning toward saving up for the Cooper Varminter. But the caliber discussion here is very much of interest to me. There are a lot of truly great cartages out there - 204R, 222, 223, 220S, 22-250 and so on... So, I look forward to following this continuing discussion. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

How about the Model 700 VLS in .204. Mine has quickly become my favorite gun to shoot-{Refering to my user name}. Nikon 4.5-14x40 has a very clear image. 2 1/2" groups at 315yds laying down using my bipod. The gun shoots so well it makes me look good. I shoot it every chance I get. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good to hear more good reports about the 204R, have you shot a Coyote with it yet?

Colorado--I haven't shot any yotes with it yet. I did shoot a whitetail doe at 50yds where her neck connected to her shoulders near the spine. She couldn't have hit the ground any faster if you dropped a truck on her. Ha Ha. That Hornady 32 grain ballistic tip reaked total havoc by shocking both shoulders, the lower neck, destroyed the spine and shell fragments went through the heart and both lungs almost destroying one of the lungs. I just couldn't believe the devastation and I never imagined it would do all that. Next time, if there is a next time, it will be a head shot only. I was just curious of how it would do and since I just happen to purchase it during deer season I thought I'd try it out. I normally use 700ADL in 30-06 I've had for 27 years now. Deer slayer indeed although I bought it for predator and varmit.
You bet I love my flaaaaaaat shootin .204 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well I guess that answers the Coyote question! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I like the 221 fireball for many reasons. The fact that it does not ring my ears and still does what I want range and power wise comes right in behind the bench rest accuracy. Love the .222 also. Do you hand load? You can easily bring the 222 down to about 2800 fps. Still very accurate and noticably quiter.
