223AI vs 6x45

I picked up a Win Mod 770 222. It's pretty well rusted. It spent it's life in a dairy barn. I have me a cheap action. My question. Do i go with a 6x45 or 223 AI. Can't seem to make up my mind.

223 AI 7-8 twist gets my vote

I'm with alf on this, 22-204. I have a 6x45, a 22-204 and a 6mm-204.

The 6x45 comes out when I have to make really small groups, the other two come out when I'm hunting. For pelts it is hard to beat the 22-204, late winter northern coyotes the 6mm-204 with 55gn NBT Lead Frees and 58gr V-Max work well on pelts if I don't get near the edges.

I'm too cheap to waste bullets, powder and barrels fireforming to get full potential of a rifle.

Anytime I get a chance to shoot, FFing or not, I've never seen it as wasting anything. I call it practice or kill'n stuff.
On that note, a 22-204 would be a fun one to try.

Since you only asked about the 6x45 and the .223 AI my vote goes for the AI. But if you go with a short barrel you will lose any velocity gain that you will get with the improved case. It may be a bit more handy but at the cost of more noise and less speed and for a varmint rifle that is going the wrong direction in my book.

Much to like about the .223 AI. A bit more speed is one of them.

The 22-204 is a Improved version of the 222 Rem Mag 30 degree shoulder, shoulder moved forward and body slightly straightened, more of a Gibbs improvement than an Ackley. Here's a post from another thread. Thank you alf for the photo and text.

22-204 everything a 223AI can do and then some and no fireforming

You mean the .222 remington magnum! I remeber a friend of my Dads had one. When I was young we would have shootout/cookout kinda thing and that was the first rifle I think I ever shot.

Actually it is a 222 Rem Mag IMP.

The 22-204 is what I would do with a small bolt face. Run it in a 1-9 twist for maximum fun!

Actually it's not. I'd call it more of a 222RM Gibbs, as the shoulder is blown forward .275" ala Gibbs rounds.

I think I've posted this pic a hundred times.....

Some cases for comparison.....

221 Fireball --- 222 Rem --- 223 REM --- 223 Ackley --- 222 Rem mag --- 22-204

The the 22-204 has about one more grain capacity than a 223 Ackley and almost two more than a 222 RM, and NO FIREFORMING required.

That would not be bad except for the fact that .222 Mag brass is all but impossible to find. I have not seen it on the shelf in many years even.

That 221 fire ball has a split neck, its a dummy round right?.

How about an .223 Ackley out of the two choices you asked about.

About three weeks ago I was in Houston and I bought three new 100 rounds bags of 222 Rem Mag brass. IIRC, the shop still has 4 other bags left. Earlier this year I bought some from Midway USA.

I don't plan to use any of it to make an improved 222 Rem Mag as I have several of the plain vanilla varieties in gun safes. These 300 rounds are for a new-to-me 222 Rem Mag rifle.

If you want to go the 204 Ruger brass route to get there, any decent gun shop should have 204 Ruger brass in huge amounts. At least the ones around here do.

No WalMarts were surveyed in the writing of this post.

From the 2 Id hit the 6x45.
It will sling a 55g-95g bullet in a 20" 1/10" twist bbl to 800 yds. w/ease & with as much accuracy as the AI w/out the fire forming issue. A quick neck up, load and go shoot or hunt.
I built a 6x45 and its the best & most accurate gun Ive done to date.
