We recommend 7 mm mag; 300 mag; 338. We do not recommend 30-30, 30.06; 243 (not for elk; deer is ok).

That's too funny...where did you pluck that gem from?...Tell me it was the Montana DNR website.

Hey Brad

Since this horse won't die, let's give it some help.

Yup, elkmaster, like you I am bragging on my 280, here's my Cooper M52. Scope is a Bushnell 6500 2.5-16X43. It's a whole lot heavier than your M70. But then I can't do a lot of walking anymore.

It's NOT a 243! Hehe!

Why is it that you guys think that if you shoot small calibers your the only ones that can shoot where your aiming, better than the guys with 30 calibers and the magnums. [beeep] I contend that its the recoil that your afraid of and so you justify shooting marginal calibers because your such a crack shot.IMGMAFB! And there is a lot of neck that is nothing but meat good luck with that one. I only hit them in the neck person!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An 85 grain TSX will kill an elk just fine out to a reasonable distance. To be clear, I define reasonable in a .243 at 200 yards or less.

When my son begins pursuing elk with me in a few years (12 years old), that is most certainly what he'll be carrying because that's an appropriate cartridge for a young man his age to shoot. As he gets older, I expect he'll take a larger caliber.

Yes we'll have to pass on "marginal" shots, but then again I intend to teach him to do that regardless of the caliber in question.

A person reading this thread would think that it is next to impossible to get within 200 yards of an elk that isn't facing directly away from you and running wide open. I'm not saying it's EASY, but it's certainly not like we're attempting cold fusion or anything.

Bullet placement first, bullet construction second, and bullet speed is a DISTANT third.

My son will be more likely to hone his shooting abilities and address the first in that series with a .243 than another more "powerful" cartridge.

That's my opinion and you're certainly welcome to yours or course. As a final point of clarification, I am not John Wayne, Carlos Hathcock, or Ishi. I have killed somewhere between 15 and 20 elk though, and have seen or been a part of about twice that number of other elk taken by others so I do have some perspective.

No, I believe it came out of the Cooper shop. Hendershot's had a series of M52's made up called the Custom Sporter. Nobody else had any of them. Most of them had AA or AA+ french walnut with a 1" recoil pad and fluted barrels.

Some of the wood looked really nice, some looked like broom stick material.

I've got a 25-06 from the same series and the wood is nice but not as nice as the 280.

Don't even own a 243!

Just wondered. I've seen a few like that where Cooper teamed up with Luxus for their high grade walnut
